GEAR: BIG WING OR BIG FOIL FOR SUPER LIGHT WIND CONDITIONS?

Here's how to prioritize upgrades to your wing foil quiver for challenging wind conditions.

The answer to that question obviously depends where you’re starting from and what you’re priorities are. Let’s assume you’re an intermediate level rider with a quiver build-up for the 15-30 knots range. So a board of a volume that more or less equals your weight, paired with a foil in the 800/1000cm2 range. The game-changing option for your light wind sessions would be a narrow board like the Cruzader, with a positive volume, paired with a high-aspect foil like the Sirus. But is a bigger setup more efficient than a bigger wing ?

Wing foiler: Ahiri, GONG team rider, with a Cruzader Point, Droid Perf Series 2024V2 and a Sirus L  front wing.

First, why is this combination a game-changer?

Narrow boards generate less drag and provide incredible efficiency in light wind. Their streamlined shape allows you to glide faster and get on foil more easily, even in marginal conditions.

The Cruzader is particularly designed for riders who want to harness the smallest wind energy, especially when paired with a high-performance foil.

It’s a key factor for optimizing the energy transfer from your wing to the foil, making light wind riding a lot more enjoyable and dynamic.

A high-aspect foil like the Sirus or the Veloce HDW offers unmatched glide and the ability to generate apparent wind quickly. This reduces your reliance on brute force pumping or oversized wings.

They excel in light wind by converting even minimal energy into forward motion, giving you longer, smoother flights.

It’s particularly great for flat water or rolling bumps, where maintaining glide is essential.

  • Should you go for a bigger wing or a bigger foil?
    • Bigger wing: While a larger wing (e.g., 6m or more) can help in light wind, it can become cumbersome, especially for maneuvers or gusty conditions. If you already have a mid-sized wing (5m-6m), it might be enough.
    • Bigger foil: Upgrading to a high-aspect foil like the Sirus has a more dramatic impact on your ability to fly in light wind. It’s less about size and more about efficiency and glide.

While the bigger wing will help you to get on foil more easily, the bigger foil will help you stay on foil more easily. Again, it depends on your priority. If you want a smaller and more reactive foil, a bigger wing makes total sense. If staying on foil is what matters most, then having a high aspect foil of a larger size is a huge asset.

The true light wind game-changer:

The record breaking combination in super light conditions is a Cruzader (Diamond, Point or Point LW) with a Sirus foil setup.

This combination:

  • Lowers the energy needed to get on foil.
  • Maximizes glide and apparent wind generation.
  • Keeps your ride dynamic, efficient, and fun without relying solely on oversized equipment.
