Review from Gilles, who gauged the performance of the Ultra Trail over a few dock start sessions.

Pump foiler: Valentin, GONG staff, on a Kluber 80 HDCC.

Experience and Setup

“Ultra Trail XL: Feedback after 5 sessions
Rider weight: 70 kg
Current setup: Kluber 80 / Carbon Mast HM 72 v2 / Ultra Trail XL (v3) and Veloce H (v3) M stabilizer
Previous setup: Sirus XL 136 V2 and Sirus v2 45cm stabilizer
Level: Intermediate+ (started in Sept. 2024, approx. 78 sessions so far)
Longest duration on Sirus XL: around 2 minutes (typically 1 min 20 sec)”

First Sessions with the Ultra Trail

“Sessions 1–3: A lot of difficulty finding the right dead start technique, as the wing demands a higher initial speed compared to the Sirus (obviously, but you have to experience it in your body to truly get it!). However, the success rate gently improved.

Pumping: Struggled to figure out how to adapt the motion. I exhausted myself much more than on the Sirus because the rhythm was off and I introduced a lot of unnecessary movements due to unstable footing.”

Finding the Pumping Rhythm

“Sessions 4–5: Success rate for starts was excellent by session 4. I had 11 successful starts out of 12 (92%). Pumping became much more efficient, close to what I get with the Sirus.
I tried the Sirus again between sessions 3 and 4 and felt like I was dragging a weight, BUT it’s very forgiving on the start.

I’m not sure I’ll go back to using the Sirus much in the future because the sensations on the Ultra Trail align with what GONG says about the wing: it’s more technical, but allows for longer pumping. Also, it flies fast!!!

Verdict: Completely satisfied with the Ultra Trail. You just need to already be comfortable with more accessible wings.”
