First session with the SUP foil downwind board for Lionel, who made up his mind with the NOTW 8'8.

SUP foiler: Malo, GONG team rider, with a NOTW EPS Pro and Carbon Pro 8” paddle.

“A little feedback for those of you who, like me, would like to start downwind SUP foiling with an intermediate SUP level. To put it in context, I must have done 10 SUP sessions on my 140-liter board in 5 years (I learned on a bigger board though). I weigh around 75kg and regularly do wing foiling sessions in Belgium, where conditions are more suitable for wind sports than surfing, which is why I wanted to get into downwinders.”

Lateral stability and glide?

“I'd read a lot of feedback about some pretty challenging debuts, so I decided to go for the biggest board of the range. The one that provides the best glide at the start. I pre-ordered the NOTW 8'8 and in the meantime had the opportunity to test it (thanks David from GONG!). It was a first time for me during this three-day weekend in windless conditions, but with 0.5 to 1m waves and period. It was really flat between sets. Visually, the board looks really narrow, but in the end I had no more trouble standing on it than on my usual SUP. The foil stabilizes the board enormously laterally. That's the first good news. The next thing that struck me was the board's glide. With the help of the waves coming in, I was able to generate speed without having to paddle too hard. The volume at the nose means you can press hard on the front without pearling. Even when I made mistakes with my stance and water passed over the nose, the board resurfaced like the bow of a merchant ship through the storm. It's a real confidence booster.”

Pad, foil and conclusion

“Also noteworthy: the quality of the pad. Comfort and grip are top-notch, and that matters when it comes to strapless downwinders 😅. I started out with a Curve 3XL-H and then switched to a Curve XL-H. I couldn’t hold the 3XL-H down when dropping in the hollow part of the wave. Finally, with the Curve XL-H, I took off with the breaking wave but was able to better control the flight. I even managed a few exits on waves that were opening up! So happy for my first session! 😀 Well, it'll be a different kettle of fish in 20 knots of chop, but then, I didn't learn wing foiling in a day either. To be continued! I hope to be able to do a test soon in downwind conditions.”
