ROLLER BACKSIDE

The first key to this move is happening before the move! A backside roller that sends buckets of water is the continuation of a clean and powerful bottom turn.

If the wave is powerful you can get speed far ahead of the wave with the lowest possible bottom turn by being well grouped together. On a softer wave the bottom turn will be more down the line to generate speed which will complicate the pivot at the top turn.

Rotate the shoulders to the exact location where you want to place the maneuver. The upper body must always be one step ahead because it guides the board and it is the rotation of the body that will store energy in the twist of your body to release it on the turn. The upper body pivots and the lower follows at the exact moment of the turn. The transfer of foot pressure on the tail of the board at the peak of the carve must be strong but measured so as not to stall and end up flat on your stomach.

At the end of the maneuver the gaze is immediately directed towards the next section 😉
