CHOOSE YOUR SURF TECHNO

Like the shape of a surfboard, its technology is a parameter that determines its qualities on the water and on land. GONG offers 4 technos for rigid surfboards: PU, EPS, WCKF or Origin 2.0. But which one to choose?

PU technology: for purists and fans of mellowness

It’s the traditional and noble technology of the artisan shaper. Our boards in PU technology are equipped with high-end materials chosen for their adequacy with the requirements of our specifications (Australian Bennett foam blanks, polyester resin, fiberglass, patented FCS II box). They offer an incomparable feeling.

A PU board has its mass placed at the heart of the board, the foam blank being the essential element. So a PU board will have a very centered inertia, well under the feet. The board will be soft and will give the impression of erasing the choppy water. The quality of PU is in its very specific inertia. For an equivalent shape, the PU construction will be heavier than the EPS, the foam blank being more dense.

The result is a board with more inertia, faster and smoother.

PU construction is preferred in the following cases:

  • You are looking to surf consistent and powerful waves, and therefore benefit from a stable and fast board
  • You mainly surf on rough waters (on shore or side-shore)
  • You are looking for a versatile board, to surf both small conditions and stronger waves

The price to pay on the PU is a few dips when we do something stupid. This seems perfectly acceptable when you know that the board will never take water and can be repaired in 15 minutes.

Technical details:

  • Board, 100% Polyester Resin over Polyurethane Bennett Foam Blanks (50 kg/m3).
  • 3-5mm High Quality Wood Stringers to avoid folding.
  • Deck detail : 2 layers of 4oz or 6oz (depending on Board) Fiber Glass.
  • Hull detail : 1 Layer of 4oz or 6oz (depending on Board) Fiber Glass.
  • Reinforcements : a large patch of 4oz Fiber Glass enshrouds the Tail and the Fin Boxes.
  • Pre-shape by digital control, and shape controlled by traditional templates, 100% Hand Finished.
  • Mat finish for a better glide, less sensitive to scratching, comp look.
  • This Techno is easily repairable, most notably with UV Resin.
  • Hydrophobic foam that sucks less water in case of damage.
  • These Boards are produced in China in the most experienced and specialized Surfboard factory.

EPS technology: for lightness and dynamism

It’s a modern technology that is popular with more technical surfers today. EPS surfboards are equipped with high-end materials chosen for their adequacy with the requirements of our specifications (EPS foam blanks, Epoxy resin, fiberglass, patented FCS II box). EPS technology brings lightness and responsiveness to your board for maximum performance, especially in small conditions, or more solid but glassy conditions.

EPS foam is much lighter than PU foam. On average, 30% lighter. As a result, surfers looking for maximum responsiveness are turning more and more to this type of technology, which offers better performance in small to medium waves, or waves requiring rapid sequences of maneuvers. For lamination, epoxy resin is the only one that can be used on an EPS foam blank. This type of resin gives the board more resistance.

The EPS construction is preferred in the following cases:

  • You are an experienced surfer looking for a board that will answer instantaneously
  • You are an intermediate surfer looking for a more nervous board to work your first turns more easily
  • You mainly surf small waves, or glassy conditions.

On the other hand, the main drawback is that EPS foam is hydrophilic. EPS boards can fill up with water in a few sessions in case of ding, so it will take a long time to dry before being able to repair.

Technical details:

  • Board, 100% Epoxy Resin over 28kg/m3 Polystyrene foam Blank.
  • Wood Stringer, high Quality and 3-5mm for limiting folding.
  • Deck detail : 1 layer of 6oe Fiber Glass plus 1 layer of 4oz or 6oz.
  • Hull detail : 1 layer of 6oz Fiber Glass.
  • Reinforcements : a large patch of Fiber Glass Glass enshrouds the Tail and the Fin Boxes.
  • Pre-shape by digital control, and shape controlled by traditional templates, 100% Hand Finished.
  • Mat finish for a better glide, less sensitive to scratching, comp look.
  • This Techno is easily repairable, most notably with UV Resin.
  • Hydrophilic foam that will oblige you to get out of the water quick in case of damage.
  • Foam will melt if in contact with Acetone or Polyester Resin. Epoxy Only.
  • Excellent Blend for the best solidity/nervosity/weight while keeping in the forefront the characteristics of the Shape.
  • Resin that is 6 times more dynamic than Polyester.
  • These Boards are produced in China in the most experienced and specialized Surfboard factory.

WCKF technology: for strength

It’s the solid and high-performance technology at a competitive price. A beautiful modern composite construction.

We apply a wooden plating on the entire deck and the hull. The goal is to have a board that is more resistant to shocks while surfing and on the ground.

A beginner / intermediate surfer, due to his inexperience, does not always sit in the same place, may use his knee to stand up, and therefore tend to damage his board more quickly. WCKF technology will greatly reduce this phenomenon, in order to guarantee a durable board. The Kevlar rails will provide additional security for the board, to make it more resistant to breakage.

Be careful not to confuse this technology with technologies that use wood for decoration. Our use of wood is above all meant for mechanical strength. Some brands use wood as a simple decorative item by placing it on the surface under a light varnish. At the slightest shock, it takes water and the result is excruciating. Our wood is trapped between two thick layers of lamination. It’s reinforced concrete, not plaster!

WCKF construction is preferred in the following cases:

  • You are a beginner / intermediate surfer and are looking for a durable board, not very sensitive to shocks and dents that will follow you during your evolution
  • You are looking for a solid board to go on a surf trip
  • In the case of a longboard, you are looking for a board that is heavier than EPS to have more inertia.

Technical details:

  • Board, 100% Epoxy over EPS foam : solid and light.
  • Deck and Hull in vacuumed wood sandwich : the wood is more resistant to shocks and absorbs the vibration.
  • Deck detail : 3 layers of Fiber Glass + wood core + reinforcements at sensitive points.
  • Hull detail : 2 layers of Fiber Glass + wood core + reinforcements at sensitive points like the Fin Boxes.
  • Rails : Full Kevlar Belt plus 5 layers of Fiber Glass overlay on the rails.
  • Reinforced Boxes and glued into a high density PVC foam with layers of FCV over them.
  • Pre-shape by digital control, and shape controlled by traditional templates, 100% Hand Finished.
  • Semi mat Pro Finish for a better glide, less sensitive to scratching.
  • This WoodCKFusion Techno is easily repairable, we have all the components necessary.
  • The WoodCKFusion is light, dynamic and remains supple and diminishes rebounding in the water.

Origin 2.0 technology: for looks and durability

This technology is basically the same as WCKF but with carbon on the rails and a translucent finish that takes a lot of time at each step for an absolutely perfect finish. It’s solid, high performance technology with a glossy finish. A superb modern composite construction.

The ORIGIN 2.0 construction is preferred in the following cases:

  • You are a beginner / intermediate surfer and are looking for a durable board, not very sensitive to shocks and dents that will follow you during your development.
  • You are looking for a solid board to go on a surf trip.
  • In the case of a longboard, you are looking for a board that is heavier than EPS to have more inertia.
  • In addition to a high-performance board, you are looking for a beautiful object, with a worked and high-end finish.

Technical details:

  • Board, 100% Epoxy over EPS Blank : solid and light.
  • Deck and Hull in vacuumed wood sandwich : the wood is resistant to shocks and softens vibrations.
  • Deck : 3 layers of fiber glass + wood core + reinforcements over all sensitive zones.
  • Hull : 2 layers of fiber glass + wood core + reinforcements over all sensitive zones, such as Fin Boxes.
  • Rails : Full Carbon Belt + 5 layers of fiber glass overlay over the rails.
  • Reinforced Boxes and glued with Epoxy inside a high density PVC foam with layers of FDV over them.
  • Digital Pre-shape, shape controlled by traditional templates, 100% hand finish.
  • Glossy Hand Finish, for that smack in the face look!
  • The Origin 2.0 Techno is repairable to new and we sell the necessary components for the job.
  • The Origin 2.0 are light, dynamic and stay supple and limit rebounding in the waves.
