Benjamin Castenskiold finishes 2nd and Sofia Ginzinger claims an incredible 3rd place in her very first event riding for GONG.

The Surf-Freestyle season delivered another spectacular chapter in El Burrero, Gran Canaria, where 45+ knot winds and powerful Atlantic swell created the perfect arena for world-class riding. With the World Title race heating up, GONG riders stepped up when it mattered most, leaving Gran Canaria with two podium finishes.

Benjamin Castenskiold pushes the limits to take second

Defending World Champion Benjamin Castenskiold once again proved why he is one of the most complete riders on tour. Throughout the event he showcased exceptional consistency, explosive power, and technical precision in some of the strongest conditions of the season.

His semifinal was one for the books. Benjamin landed a perfect 10-point trick and posted an outstanding 28.77-point heat, comfortably securing his place in the final.

The final became an all-out battle between Benjamin, Chris MacDonald, Axel Gerard and Tomas Acherer. With scores incredibly close from the opening exchanges, every attempt mattered. Benjamin kept applying pressure until the very last trick, ultimately finishing just 0.50 points from victory.

A huge performance that keeps Benjamin firmly in contention as the Surf-Freestyle World Title heads into its decisive final stop.

Sofia Ginzinger shines in her GONG debut

Making her first-ever competition representing GONG, Sofia Ginzinger delivered an outstanding performance from start to finish.

The twelve year old Tarifa-based rider navigated the challenging conditions with confidence, advancing through the rounds before earning her place in the final alongside some of the biggest names in women's wingfoiling.

In a stacked final featuring Viola Lippitsch, Nia Suardiaz and Bowien van der Linden, Sofia stayed composed and secured a remarkable third place, an exceptional result for her debut in GONG colours.

Gran Canaria showcased exactly what Surf-Freestyle is all about: extreme wind, massive commitment, and the highest level of riding the discipline has ever seen. From Benjamin's perfect 10 and thrilling battle for victory to Sofia's dream debut, Team GONG leaves Gran Canaria with confidence and momentum.

Next stop: Fuerteventura, where the final event of the 2026 GWA Surf-Freestyle season will decide the World Champions, in both Surf-Freestyle and Freefly-Slalom.
