A victory built on consistency, speed, and a perfect mastery of the Dominican conditions.
Bastien Escofet claimed victory at the Cabarete Wing Fest, a stop on the SFT Parawing World Cup held in the Dominican Republic. He secured a convincing win after an intense weekend of racing against several riders already well established on the international wing foil circuit.
Foiler: Bastien, GONG team rider, riding a Cruzader Diamond FSP Pro, Lowkite Plus V3, HM100 mast, Ypra Slalom front wing, and Hyper Trail stabilizer.
Short Technical Races and a Downwinder
The competition format combined short, technical races with a 12 km long-distance downwind race whose points counted triple toward the overall standings. Starts were made on a beam reach, followed by a mandatory pumping zone before heading back toward the beach on another beam reach.
Each race ended with a spectacular beach finish, where riders had to cross the finish line running on the sand after leaving their equipment on the beach.
Bastien won every race except one. Even in the only race he did not win, he finished second within the same second as the winner after a final sprint on the beach, where his rival managed to trigger the finish buzzer by the narrowest of margins. A moment that perfectly illustrates the intensity of the competition.
The conditions provided an exceptional playground throughout the event. With 20 to 25 knots of wind, well-developed swell, and occasional waves along the course, competitors were able to fully exploit the capabilities of both the parawing and foil.
“The conditions were exceptional. The downwind race counted triple and proved decisive for the overall ranking. The level was very high, with several riders who are regular wing foil podium finishers. I managed to adapt my equipment to the different courses and conditions, which made the difference throughout the weekend,” explains Bastien.
Foiler: Bastien, GONG team rider, riding a Cruzader Diamond FSP Pro, Lowkite Neutra V3, HM77 mast, Veloce front wing, and Hyper Trail stabilizer.
What Equipment Did He Use?
For the short-course races, Bastien rode a 5'6 Diamond board with 72 liters of volume, equipped with an HM100 mast, a Ypra Slalom 700 front wing, an Hyper Trail XL stabilizer, and a Short fuselage.
For the long-distance race, he switched to an HM77 mast paired with a prototype Veloce front wing (more information coming very soon) along with a Hyper Trail L stabilizer and a Medium fuselage.
On the wing side, the versatility of the Lowkite Plus in 3.5, 4, and 5 m² sizes, as well as the Neutra Light 4 m² for the downwind race, allowed him to optimize his performance throughout the competition.
