GEAR: FACTS AND FICTIONS ABOUT THE USE OF A CARBON MAST THAT ISN’T INTENDED FOR GIANT WINGS

Many of you are wondering if you can use a carbon mast that isn’t intended for giant front wings. Let’s separate facts from fiction.

Can I use my V2 carbon mast with giant wings?

Even with our super affordable prices, buying an HM mast, plus a giant FW, plus a Cruzader, is a HUGE budget. So no pressure: a V2 Carbon Mast, not intended for giant front wings, will not break. It just won’t be as precise in piloting.

Under what conditions can a mast break?

A mast will break if you hit it hard, if it gets hammered in the waves, if you pull like crazy on it in wake foiling etc… but in normal use a non-HM mast is as strong as an HM mast.

What about the fuselage? Can it break?

Yes, an aluminum fuselage can break, the Titanium Pro Fuselage should be preferred for giant wings (over 120cm of wingspan).

So what are the benefits of an HM mast?

The HM mast will provide more piloting precision with giant front wings. And even more if you go for a 72HM, 79HM or 86HM Mast, which have thicknesses dedicated to the efforts of giant FWs.

Can I use an aluminum mast?

When using giant front wings, the aluminum mast should be avoided. It’s almost stiffer than a V2 carbon mast, however, it can bend and it will not regain its shape. An option to forget. Even for the top plate, it’s not great 😉

Can I use my carbon V2 85 mast, Titanium Pro fuselage, with a Sirus XXL and a HIPE Cruzader, in 10/12 knots max?

Yes you can, without a problem. It will just feel a bit more fuzzy, more flexible when engaging a jibe. But if you take it easy and cool, it will be imperceptible. A mast that only undergoes efforts in its axis never lacks rigidity. So you should keep it cool when changing trajectory and not ride at Mach 12 in a monstrous chop 😉

Up to which front wing size can the HM 85 be favored over the HM 86 Mast?

From a wingspan of 100cm, it’s time to switch from the 85HM to 86HM Mast. This comes down to switching from normal conditions to really light wind conditions with a big FW. Note that a wingspan of 110 with a very high aspect ratio will not force much more on the mast than a 100 wingspan with a low ratio. So it is not a clear and precise border. It is up to you to feel if the mast still feels stiff and precise enough for your liking. So always buy your front wings before the 86HM mast. If the 85HM mast suits you, it’s all good 🙂
