The ultra-light, compact, and explosive wing for surf freestyle, wave riding, and aggressive freeride, with lively, precise handling accessible even in light wind.
Presentation
The Droid Light retains the compact, powerful, and explosive DNA of the Droid in a version that is approximately 25% lighter, delivering greater freedom, maneuverability, and riding sensations in every phase where wing weight makes a real difference.
In your hands, the difference is immediate: the Droid Light feels much more responsive, smoother, easier to position, and far less physically demanding to ride. Every movement requires less effort, whether pumping, accelerating, repositioning the wing while surfing, or linking transitions.
This weight reduction of around 500 g completely transforms low-end performance. The wing rises more easily in your hands, remains suspended more naturally during waiting phases, and pumps more efficiently because less energy is wasted moving unnecessary mass.
The Droid Light preserves the explosive character of the Droid: a compact, powerful, and highly maneuverable wing designed for surf freestyle, airs, rotations, aggressive acceleration, and tricks where the wing must move quickly, powerfully, and precisely.
Its lightweight construction also radically changes the feeling in wave riding and freefly. The wing disappears more naturally, stays in the air with very little inertia, and delivers much greater freedom through turns, repositioning, and phases where the foil takes over.
The Light construction is based on targeted weight reduction: fewer leading-edge segments, fewer assemblies, fewer seams, a simplified center strut, lighter bladders, and reinforcements reduced to the essentials. Material is retained only where it benefits performance and removed where it limits responsiveness.
This reduction in material also improves the overall balance of the wing. By removing weight from the extremities, the Droid Light turns faster, repositions more easily, and maintains the compact and reactive feeling that defines the Droid during aerial maneuvers.
The 55 g canopy fabric delivers the right balance for this ultra-light construction: light enough to significantly reduce inertia, yet strong enough to maintain real structural integrity while riding. This is a lightweight performance wing built for riding, not a fragile toy without structure.
The shape retains the core fundamentals of the 2026 Droid with a compact outline, pronounced profile, and precise sheeting control. The traction remains clear, progressive, and easy to control, with a smoother and more breathable feeling thanks to the reduced weight.
The squared tips and controlled twist contribute to this stability. The wing remains locked in, predictable, and stable in the hands while offering faster response when accelerating, carving tight turns, or repositioning the wing after a move.
The slightly reduced dihedral reinforces direct control. The Droid Light delivers an extremely connected and precise feeling, with less inertia between rider input and wing response.
The choice of a construction without a One Pump system saves weight and allows independent adjustment of leading-edge and strut pressures. This makes it possible to fine-tune the wing’s behavior according to rider size, riding style, and conditions while maintaining a lighter and simpler architecture.
The absence of windows, a leading-edge zipper, and unnecessary reinforcements follows the same philosophy: every gram must serve riding performance. This Droid Light is built to fly, pump, surf, carve, and accelerate, not to be dragged across sand or abused on the ground.
The almost rigid textile downwind handle improves handling in freefly and surf. Its positioning minimizes leash interference and keeps the wing clean, stable, and intuitive when held from the front.
The boom delivers direct and precise control while locking in the profile for greater performance. It simplifies grip transitions, facilitates hand changes, and opens up huge possibilities in freestyle, surf freestyle, and all modern transition maneuvers.
The Droid Light fully embraces its purpose: prioritizing lightness, pumping efficiency, maneuverability, freefly, tricks, and freedom in the hands. It is not intended to replace a more reinforced wing for highly abrasive use or for riders who are rough on their gear outside the water.
It is a more aerial Droid in the hands, lighter on the arms, and freer in maneuvers. For riders who want to rediscover the explosive character of the Droid with maximum lightness and riding sensation, the Droid Light opens a completely new dimension.
Light Feeling
The Droid Light is not just light: it is above all perfectly balanced. By removing unnecessary weight from the tips, material remains only where it is needed. This mass distribution improves rotation, reduces inertia at the wingtip, stabilizes the wing and gives this sensation of uniform lightness in your hands.
It breathes, glides and remains natural to pilot.
Low end and Pumping
The lightness of the Droid Light allows for early take-off and remains efficient in light wind, even when the wind becomes gusty. It maintains presence without pulling unnecessarily, glides through lulls, and helps exploit every puff to relaunch, go upwind, or reposition with minimal effort.
Less inertia also means more efficiency when pumping: the wing responds quickly, gets moving easily, and transforms every motion into useful lift. In light wind, this efficiency changes everything: you start earlier, maintain glide more easily between lulls, and fatigue much less.
Result: more smoothness, more fluidity, and more sessions saved when conditions are marginal.
Note that this very light wing also allows you to use more surface area without feeling the weight. A 5.5m2 light wing will weigh the same as a usual 4.5m2 wing. This is a major advantage when you want a light wind wing but want to spare your shoulders ;-)
UPE Aramid
One of the major advantages of Aramid wings lies in the material of their inflatable structure: UPE Aramid. Introduced by GONG in 2023 on the Pulse, this revolutionary fabric marked a decisive turning point.
UPE Aramid is quite simply the lightest and stiffest material on the market. At 85 g/m², or half the weight of Dacron, it offers an unrivaled weight-to-stiffness ratio. The result: a more reactive, more precise, and incredibly light wing in hand. On a 5 m² wing, the gain is approximately 400 g compared to a classic construction: a huge difference that radically changes the feeling on the water.
Its exceptional stiffness completely locks the shape. The wing no longer folds: its behavior is controlled and predictable. Twisting is no longer endured but controlled by the orientation of the Aramid fibers and the design of the leading edge. Every deformation is intentional, optimized to improve handling and not to compensate for a structural weakness.
Another key advantage: its very low water absorption rate. Even after several hours at sea, the wing does not get heavier and retains the same lightness as when dry. This improves maneuverability, comfort, and control, especially in surfing or freefly.
But an exceptional material is only valuable with perfect implementation. We therefore spent months testing and comparing all known assembly processes, pushing the limits on tensile benches. This work allowed us to develop methods exclusive to GONG, more reliable and stronger than current standards.
The result: ultra-light, stiff, and precise wings, but also remarkably strong. UPE Aramid is not just a technical advance, it's a revolution that transforms the feeling of control and the durability of our wings.
Better than gold !!!
Boom Options
Your choice of boom primarily depends on your riding style and the sensations you seek. For everyday, simple, and quick use, the GFS V3 is the obvious choice: its clip-in system allows you to assemble and disassemble the boom in seconds, without tools, with a clean and rigid fit. For those who want a reliable, light, and efficient setup, the GFS V2 offers an excellent balance between rigidity, precision, and accessibility. Riders who move around a lot, travel, or want to optimize their bag will choose the 2-piece boom, compact for transport but serious for riding. Finally, for those who want the best possible feel, the Full Carbon is the ultimate weapon: maximum rigidity, instant response, and absolute control in challenging maneuvers.
In short: choose the boom that matches your pace. The most practical for frequent riding, the most compact for travel, the most rigid for performance.
Aramid Light Technology
The Droid Light is based on a radical approach to construction: removing everything that is not strictly essential to retain only performance. Every gram is optimized with a clear objective: to obtain the lightest possible wing while maintaining strength and reliability in use.
The choice of 55g canopy perfectly embodies this philosophy. Lighter than that of an Aramid X, it offers equivalent resistance to a classic Aramid. Combined with a significant reduction in the number of panels, with a simplified leading edge and a central strut in only three sections, it limits seams, reduces weight, and improves the consistency of flex for smoother handling.
This logic is found in every detail. A lighter 0.06 mm bladder with targeted reinforcement, the absence of a One Pump system to precisely adjust pressures, the removal of the zipper on the leading edge with access via the tips, and the elimination of numerous non-essential elements such as superfluous reinforcements. Even the junction between the canopy and the leading edge is refined with lighter fabric and optimized seams.
Above all, this overall effort achieves a perfect balance. By avoiding adding weight to the extremities, the mass distribution remains ideal. The result is immediate: less inertia, more responsiveness, a wing that stays airborne in light winds and offers an exceptional feeling of fluidity and freedom in light wind conditions.
This minimalist approach requires careful use: inflation must be precise to preserve the materials, but in return, the performance in light wind is simply exceptional.

Buying guide
Who is it for?
Freestylers, freeriders, and thrill seekers, this wing is made for you!
The Droid is designed for riders looking for a compact, powerful, and ultra-responsive wing. Accessible to motivated beginners but built for experienced riders seeking performance, it adapts to your level while constantly pushing you to progress.
Powerful and undeniably performance-oriented, it is made for riders who want to fully exploit their potential. The Droid accelerates hard and demands strong physical commitment, making it ideal for riders motivated to push their limits. While its intensity is a huge advantage in freestyle and jumps, it can be softened in freeride by using a harness, especially during longer runs.
With its carbon boom, the Droid delivers instant responsiveness and surgical control, perfect for precise handling and powerful maneuvers. It demands commitment, but in return, it launches you into a world of uncompromising performance.
What is it for?
The Droid is an ultra-versatile wing that excels in demanding disciplines while remaining accessible. Here are its strengths:
- Freestyle and flatwater:
designed for modern and technical maneuvers, it delivers instant acceleration and explosive pop, perfect for linking the most committed tricks with fluidity. - Early takeoff:
its compact design and concentrated power allow early lift even when underpowered. Ideal for maximizing sessions in all conditions without getting stuck on the water. - Aggressive surf riding:
maneuverable and reactive, it adapts perfectly to multi-peak waves where opportunism and responsiveness are key, with precise control for aggressive riding. - Transitions and rotations:
thanks to its compact wingspan, it facilitates jibes, tacks, and 360s while reducing the risk of touching the water. - Slalom and fast freeride:
powerful with strong forward pull, it delivers dynamic riding that allows you to ride at full speed with optimal control.
The carbon boom reinforces profile stiffness for consistent performance and instant response in every situation. Whatever happens, your hands naturally find the perfect position on the boom. The Droid is a true sensation machine, built to push your limits and elevate your riding.
Droid OR Neutra?
Droid: designed for riders who like to push hard. Its concentrated power and explosive maneuverability make it the perfect wing for surf freestyle and flatwater tricks. It performs incredibly well in surf, but its main purpose is to take your performance to the next level.
Neutra: ideal for riders who prioritize smooth glide and precise surf handling. Its lighter carbon boom makes it ultra-maneuverable and perfect for endless freefly lines and wave riding. Each model has its own personality, but they all share one goal: delivering the best possible experience on the water with style and performance.
If your priority is freestyle performance, huge low-end power, strong acceleration, and still having fun in wave riding when conditions allow, the Droid is the better choice.
Understanding the GONG range
Plus: the versatile and accessible wing designed for progression.
Droid: surf / freestyle with explosive power. Also a benchmark in light wind.
Neutra: the smooth wing for surf, freefly, and endless carving.
Pulse: the ultimate race wing with incredible upwind ability and speed.
The Droid is your best ally for explosive and frustration-free sessions. Compact, reactive, and incredibly high-performing, it transforms every session into something exceptional.
What size?
Do not overestimate wing power. An 85 kg rider typically needs 15 to 20 knots with a 5 m² wing to get flying at first. After around fifteen sessions, they will fly comfortably in 15 knots with a 5 m². Athletic riders who pump efficiently may even take off in 12 knots and ride through lulls down to 8 knots. All of this takes time and practice. Month after month, as you discover increasingly specialized equipment, riding below 10 knots will become second nature.
Which material?
The leading-edge material primarily depends on your riding style and ambitions. If you enjoy relaxed freeride, are learning your first tricks, or love surf and freefly, a Dacron leading edge and center strut will be perfect.
On the other hand, if you like riding hard with a wing that delivers huge power and explosive acceleration, do not hesitate: UPE Aramid provides absolute stiffness with undeniable advantages. The performance gap is massive: faster speed, higher jumps, and incredible turning thanks to thinner diameters.
To push performance even further, combine the UPE Aramid structure with the ultra-stiff Code X canopy fabric. This can boost your performance by around 15% and unlock top-level wing riding performance.
As the sport evolves rapidly, our team pushed us to develop an even stiffer wing. This led to the creation of Aramid CZ technology, delivering performance from another world entirely: stiffer, faster, and more powerful. Reserved exclusively for pro riders and highly experienced enthusiasts ready to handle an extremely demanding wing.

Which quiver?
The Droid works with everything but pairs especially well with a compact and lightweight board or a Cruzader for light wind.
Typical pairings include:
- a Cruzader for light wind
- a Mint for freeride
- a Mint, short Cruzader, or Lethal for freefly
- a Hyperloop for freestyle
- a Stunt for surf freestyle
- a Lethal for surf.
It naturally performs best with a performance-oriented foil, for example with an 85 cm mast.
It pairs extremely well with:
- a Veloce HDW or Sirus in light wind
- a Fluid for freeride
- an Ypra Surf Freestyle or pure Freestyle foil for freestyle
- a Veloce for freefly
- a Curve or Fluid for surf.
You can (and probably should) add a SUP and a surf foil for windless days, a kite for huge boosts, and likely a surfboard quiver for quality waves. But if you are getting into winging, you probably already have these toys in the garage 😉
Which leash?
A wing leash between 5’5 and 8’ is ideal, preferably a coiled leash specifically designed for winging. A short leash allows quick wing recovery, while a longer leash protects the wing from foil impacts by letting it drift farther away.
Check its condition before every session and replace it yearly. It is your life jacket.
Do not let your wing flap violently in the wind at the end of the leash, it is not indestructible. The same applies in waves: never hold your wing back by the leash or it may explode, or you may injure yourself.
Harness or not?
The Droid does not require a harness for surf freestyle because runs are generally short. However, it is a powerful and reactive wing that becomes much more efficient with a harness in race and freeride programs for riders who fully exploit its capabilities.
Riding without a harness feels amazing because of the freedom it provides. You can move in every direction, which feels incredibly natural.
However, it requires riding underpowered and doing shorter runs to avoid excessive arm fatigue. It also means pumping more often to take off again.
So if you prefer riding powered up, using a harness becomes almost essential unless you want your sessions limited to one hour. Installing harness lines is extremely simple (see our tutorials on the forum). We recommend using the least rigid and least restrictive harness possible, with either a minimalist hook or a windsurf-style hook for maximum comfort.
A range of harness lines specially designed for winging is available in several sizes.
It is up to you whether feeling and aesthetics matter more than pure performance. However, more and more riders are adopting harnesses as wings become increasingly powerful and performance-oriented.

Windows or full canopy?
Wings without windows are less expensive, around 200 g lighter, and easier to pack.
Wings with windows are safer, stiffer, and more responsive.
For beginners, wings with windows are strongly recommended because safety comes before the few grams you may save. Windows are not there to admire the scenery: they are there to spot silhouettes and avoid dangerous turns that could lead to collisions.

Equipments
Harness ends to attach directly to the boom and 100% compatible.
Our harness ends have been developed specifically for this boom and allow you to attach your GONG harness end to it for long hours of sailing without getting tired.
Semi-rigid textile downwind handle
Almost rigid, but not completely so as not to damage the board, it significantly improves wing control in freefly and surfing.
The new oval seams and reinforcements on the downwind handle anchors distribute the stresses better on the leading edge, always with durability in mind.
The Dyneema leash attachment is now on the underside of the DW handle. The leash is no longer held in the hands during freeflying.

A carbon boom
The Team Series and Pro Team Series wings are offered exclusively with a boom because the advantages of this innovation launched by GONG are numerous:
- lighter
- less drag
- more grips
- more comfort
- more performance
The boom has become essential for performing at the highest level. Indeed, one-handed tricks have become the must-have. And what a gain in freedom!
Our wings have the most ergonomic, lightweight, strong and rigid boom on the market.
Our prepreg carbon boom offers a significant weight saving compared to rigid handles, as it eliminates two fixings, saving over 200 grams. This is in addition to the 30 grams saved by using a thinner shaft.
In surfing and freeflying, this weight saving is essential; the wing remains perfectly neutral and balanced.
Zero strut flex thanks to the carbon boom which absorbs the stresses. And a strut that doesn't bend means a leech that stays taut, resulting in a powerful wing that doesn't flap and offers perfect glide.
At the front of the boom, there's a pistol grip. You can maintain a steady power output, and you eliminate any potential flaps that could slow you down in the wave, for example, when surfing in offshore winds.
The batten shape and boom angle are strategically designed to instinctively sheet in the kite without constantly bending the back arm. In addition to providing balanced pull in the arms, this allows for maximum power generation while riding effortlessly, ideal for jumps, for example.
It is also very effective when you are overpowered: no more feeling of being torn off, the wing remains perfectly controllable to maintain maximum comfort.
