Buying guide
Into surf culture, its history, beautiful boards, fluid lines and style?
It is even suitable for a beginner who wants to treat himself with a beautiful board that she/he will keep for the rest of her/his life. So if you have a good level of surfing, you will love it.
Good surfers and pros love the Carter for its rounded, relaxed and stylish lines. Everything is easy and it works all the time.
Drop very early! The Carter is unbeatable in this area. It is the first board to glide and the first one back in the line-up. A great paddler that can beat longboarders and SUPers.
Link beautiful carves together, in a magical roundness.
Cruise down-the-line and just enjoy its magical glide, sometimes with a nice cheater hang five in the pocket.
To not switch to an SUP board or a longboard and keep a style of surfing based on carves and wave work.
Traveling with a single board can be a challenge in difficult conditions but it builds up an osmosis with a board that’s easy in 95% of waves.

Below 6’8 to favor turns. It’s still a shortboard but very soft.
From 6’8 to 8’3 we are clearly talking about mid-lengths, halfway between the quality of glide of a longboard and the turns of a shortboard. The board to do everything easily!!!
From 9′ to 9’8 we switch to a cruiser style of board, a long board which drops before everyone else and which cruises down-the-line for beautiful cutbacks and re-entries.
Size: from knee high to double overhead.
Power: it works in all types of waves but prefers waves with some power, without pushing it to scary slabs.
Shape: it can handle it all but glassy waves are what you’re looking for.
One of the advantages of the 2+1 set-up is that you can experiment with several fin set-ups:
Though the Pie is also available in a wide range of lengths, it is very different from the Carter. It’s rather complementary. We love the Pie for its acceleration, especially on flat sections. Its tail makes you fly at mach 12. In the high end, it can give you such lift that it will make tightening carves or holding on to vertical faces without slowing down difficult. This is where the Carter offers a different choice with its almost pinched tail. You won’t get going as early as with a Pie, but it will offer unlimited control in hollow sections and at high speed.
So beyond an obvious choice depending on the type of waves encountered, soft waves for the Pie and powerful for the Carter, you must focus on the style. A Pie will naturally generate speed while a Carter will need to be stimulated. In reality, we will mainly surf them in two different sections of the wave. We will surf the Pie on so-called horizontal turns, with a lot of pressure on the back foot and on rather flat sections. And conversely we will surf the Carter in the pocket, as close as possible to the curl, with a lot of pressure on the front foot. Two very different styles ?
The Carter has many of the characteristics of a shortboard, but without ever really being one. With what we call a shortboard, of competition type, we seek explosiveness while we seek for glide and fluidity with a Carter.
So even on seemingly similar dimensions, we will have a completely different feeling and produce very different turns. From there to saying that the Carter is the cool version of the shortboard, there is only one step.
The Carter in larger sizes is close to a longboard, but it will paddle much faster. We’re going to drop early, that’s obvious. It will also hold better on hollow waves with its nose which grips less and which is reassuring. It’s obvious in tubes where we have real aptitude in Carter whereas it’s rather counterintuitive or sketchy when on a longboard.
Another major difference is the restriction of the range of possible maneuvers with the Carter compared to a longboard. Even if a few cheater hang fives can look great on the Carter, we are far from being able to pull the full range of moves on the nose we could with a longboard. But if these moves don’t appeal to you that much, the Carter is probably the best choice.
