EPS Surf Technology in Detail

EPS construction is the modern benchmark for surfers looking for responsiveness, light weight and immediate feedback underfoot. It combines a 28 kg/m³ EPS foam blank, epoxy resin, a fiberglass laminate and a 3 mm wooden stringer.

An EPS blank is lighter than a PU blank, and that difference dramatically changes the board's feel. Because the foam is less dense, much of the board's strength and flex characteristics come from the outer skin, the fiberglass and resin laminate surrounding the core. With more of the board's inertia distributed toward the exterior, the result is a board that feels lighter, livelier and more responsive.

The epoxy resin delivers an outstanding strength-to-weight ratio. Combined with a carefully engineered fiberglass layup, it produces a board that is lightweight, dynamic and highly durable under normal surfing conditions. It is the construction of choice for technical surfers who want instant response and explosive acceleration.

The deck features 2 layers of 6 oz fiberglass and 1 layer of 4 oz fiberglass. This laminate is designed to withstand repeated foot pressure, compression, rapid rail-to-rail transitions and the loads generated by progressive surfing. It provides excellent support underfoot without adding unnecessary weight.

The bottom features 1 layer of 6 oz fiberglass, 1 layer of 4 oz fiberglass and an additional 4 oz fiberglass reinforcement patch covering the tail and fin box area. This construction delivers an excellent balance of glide, low weight and durability where it matters most.

The tail and fin box area is one of the most highly stressed sections of any performance surfboard. It absorbs back foot pressure, torsional loads during turns, stresses generated by the fins, landings and powerful surfing. The additional 4 oz reinforcement patch strengthens this critical area while preserving the lively feel that defines EPS construction.

As with our PU boards, every EPS board starts with CNC pre-shaping to guarantee perfect consistency in volume distribution, rocker, bottom contours and outlines. Each board is then checked against traditional templates before being finished entirely by hand. The machine ensures repeatability, while the shaper's hand delivers the final precision, perfectly refined rails and seamless transitions.

The matte finish highlights the purity of the shape, reduces the appearance of scratches and gives the board a clean competition-inspired look. It perfectly reflects the philosophy behind this construction: performance, efficiency, simplicity and responsiveness.

EPS construction is easy to restore to like-new condition after dings using the appropriate epoxy repair systems. It offers an exceptional balance of strength, responsiveness and low weight, allowing the full performance of the shape to shine through. A well-built EPS board feels light, lively, fast and highly efficient at generating speed.

On the water, EPS delivers a noticeably more responsive feel than PU. The board accelerates more easily, reacts more quickly to rider input and requires less effort to generate speed. Rail-to-rail transitions are more immediate, the board offers greater pop and maintains speed more effectively whenever the surfer needs to generate their own momentum.

This construction excels in small to medium waves, softer conditions, sections that require active acceleration and any style of surfing where responsiveness is essential. It allows surfers to build speed more quickly, recover speed effortlessly and link manoeuvres with less inertia.

EPS construction can also benefit surfers who are still progressing, as the board naturally helps maintain speed, one of the most important elements in surfing. The easier a board accelerates, the more time the surfer has to find the right position, initiate a manoeuvre and fine tune their line.

How to Choose Between PU and EPS?

Choosing between PU and EPS is not simply a matter of surfing ability. It depends primarily on the conditions you surf, the feel you're looking for and how you want your board to respond under your feet.

A PU board naturally has more inertia thanks to its denser foam blank. That extra mass provides excellent stability as speed builds. In powerful waves, long walls or hollow surf, it helps the board hold its line, smooth out acceleration and remain composed. The faster you go, the more this added inertia becomes an advantage.

That same inertia is also valuable in windy or choppy conditions. While a lighter board tends to react to every movement of the water's surface, a PU board filters out much of that disturbance. It stays more connected to the wave, feels more stable underfoot and delivers a smoother, more predictable ride.

An EPS board, on the other hand, prioritizes light weight and responsiveness. It requires less effort to accelerate, generates speed more easily and transitions from rail to rail with exceptional quickness. In clean, smaller waves where the surfer needs to create speed, this liveliness becomes a real advantage. The board reacts instantly to every input, making it easy to link manoeuvres with very little inertia.

Because of its lower inertia, it is primarily the surfer, rather than the board's own weight, that positions the board on the wave. The feeling is more direct, more responsive and more dynamic.

The trade-off is that this light weight can become less comfortable as conditions become rougher. In choppy or windy surf, an EPS board follows the movement of the water more closely and may feel slightly more lively beneath your feet. Maintaining clean, precise lines therefore requires greater accuracy and commitment from the rider.

In short, choose PU if you're looking for maximum stability, confidence at high speed and a composed ride in quality waves or challenging conditions. Choose EPS if your priority is responsiveness, effortless speed generation and maximum liveliness in clean, small to medium waves.

There is no universally better option. Both constructions use exactly the same shape, but each reveals a different personality depending on the waves and the way you like to surf.
