GEAR: WHAT WING SIZE SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO START WING FOILING?

Key tips for choosing your first wing.

For an average-sized rider, a 5 m² wing offers the smoothest progression for two reasons:

It provides enough power to help you achieve your first take-offs.
Its relatively compact wingspan makes it easy to handle.

Its optimal wind range is between 15 and 20 knots, which provides ideal conditions for learning wing foiling. That means wind that is neither too light nor too strong, with only a moderate effect on the water’s surface. This usable range expands as you progress or upgrade your equipment (board and foil).

Always start with a 5 m², except when…

A 5m² wing is the best choice in 80% of cases thanks to its balance between power and size. However, there are some situations where we recommend starting with either a 4m² or a 6m²:

A beginner weighing under 60-65kg should generally choose a 4m² wing.
A beginner weighing over 90-95 kg should generally choose a 6m^² wing.
For a beginner learning in a light-wind area, typically on lakes where the wind rarely exceeds 15 knots, we may recommend a 6m^² wing for riders weighing 80kg or more.
A beginner under 1.70 m tall will find a 4m^² wing more comfortable to handle thanks to its smaller wingspan, provided they are relatively light or compensate for the reduced power with a larger board or foil.

As you progress, your wind range expands

A wing doesn’t reveal its full potential in your first few sessions. As you refine your technique, you learn to get more out of it: pumping helps you take off earlier in light wind, while better power management makes riding easier as the wind picks up. Using a wing harness also improves comfort at the top end of the wind range.

As they progress, some wing foilers move towards wings around 4.5 m² to cover their low end. More compact and dynamic, wings of this size allow more efficient pumping for take-offs that remain very early, with a welcome boost in maneuverability once flying.

Others prefer larger wings with more low-end power. The available pull makes it easier to build speed and reduces the need to pump to get flying. This is a common choice on inland waters, where the wind is generally less consistent.

The 5 m² sits between these two approaches. Its balance of power and maneuverability makes it a highly versatile wing that remains useful long after your first flights.

A quiver that grows over time

With experience, you can also add to your first wing to cover more conditions: a smaller one for windy days, a larger one for light-wind sessions. Your wing quiver then develops around your foil, board and preferences.

There’s no need to buy everything at the start: time on the water helps you identify the conditions where an additional size would be truly useful. Your 5 m² can remain at the heart of your setup as you gradually add complementary sizes.
