The shortboard to perform in lovely conditions.

Presentation

Surfing the best waves of your life means being in the right place at the right time. It also means being in total harmony with your board, in perfect rhythm to exploit these conditions to the full.

This is exactly what the Lethal does in “perfect” waves. Its round tail offers total freedom to its radical yet harmonious shape. You can vary curve radii as you like, and change trajectories effortlessly. It's perfect for turning under the lip and for correcting the trajectory in endless Indonesian tubes, for example.

Do not confuse it with a pinched round tail, the Lethal and its round pin tail offer exceptional versatility with a slightly forward wide point that adds plenty of energy and agility to this modern shape. It’s the opposite of a step-up or a mini gun. Quite simply, the Lethal is the most maneuverable board in the range.

A round tail that pivots on a dime, thin rails notably at the tail for maintaining tight turns and gripping the wave face. A centered wide point for maximum versatility. Its efficient shape gives an ultra-healthy feel despite a very playful tail. A feeling of speed and total freedom.

It's a relatively easy board to surf because it's so instinctive. You can just jump in and surf without thinking. The Lethal is the shortboard for hollow waves, both hyper-fluid and radical for scoring.

Its ability to tighten carves makes it a must-have in any good surfer's quiver.

Buying guide

For whom?

For surfers looking for an ultra-maneuverable board.

It's a revelation for anyone looking for shortboard performance in turns.

A powerful surfer will find it ideal for pushing the carves as much as he wants.

A fine-tuned surfer will find an ultra-precise board that he can put exactly where he wants.

For intermediate surfers looking for their first shortboard. For those who want an easy and immediate grip on a board that turns +++.

For experienced and expert surfers who will take it on Indonesian trips or for sessions at home.

For what?

A great board is first and foremost one that makes surfing easier, one that gives you confidence. The Lethal is a reference board for the best days, and for your trips.

To be as comfortable in 3-foot waves on your local beach break as on a reef on the other side of the world in 8-foot waves and more, and everything in between.

What all these conditions have in common is Lethal's ability to put the same intensity into waves that are nevertheless very different. To be able to make the most of these conditions, not to miss out, so that each session is epic.

Which board size?

Either you're lucky enough to live in a place where great waves are commonplace, and score good conditions every session, then you can do without superfluous volume. Alternatively, you can add volume and length to give yourself a little more comfort. As the Lethal's rail lines are thin, especially at the tail, you can increase volume without losing performance or control.

What are the ideal waves?

  • Size: from one hip size to two man sizes.

  • Power: it delivers its best in all but the softest knee waves.

  • Aspect: it goes everywhere but prefers glassy conditions, like we all do.

What technology?

We offer different technologies on certain shapes to meet the program, conditions, and sometimes individual habits.

In the case of a PU board, there will be a different behavior from an EPS board of the same shape and weight. It’s the weight distribution in the board that generates a big difference in feeling. For two blanks with the same shape, one in PU and the other in EPS, the EPS blank will be lighter, as EPS foam is less dense.

In the case of a PU board, it’s the blank that provides solidity and concentrates weight in its core. The board thus has a very “central” inertia. This makes for a very smooth board, which forgives errors but is less dynamic. The PU blank will be heavier than the EPS blank.

In the case of an Epoxy board, the blank is very light, and solidity comes from the skins. So the inertia is “peripheral,” meaning the weight of the board is on the outside, making it more mobile, agile, and dynamic.

The best comparison to explain these differences would be to say that the inertia of PU naturally gives a single fin feeling (very centered, smooth and soft pressure), while EPS gives a thruster or even quad feeling (very external pressures, immediate rail to rail, maximum nervousness).

EPS is generally preferred for boards that need dynamism, usually in small to medium conditions, schematically in waves where speed generation is required. EPS is therefore preferred on shapes where reactivity is sought, as it’s easier to turn quickly, perfect for waves that require rapid transitions. For very good surfers, this further enhances the dynamism of their surfing. For progressing surfers, EPS adds this little boost of dynamism as the board can gain speed much more easily, an important point considering that in surfing, speed is the key to everything. PU is favored for high-performance shortboards, for boards where controlling speed is the main objective.

Feelings of each: Surfers accustomed to PU will generally say that “EPS bounces and feels stiff.” While surfers used to EPS will say that “PU feels soft, lacks response, and struggles to accelerate.” These feelings often stem from habits, sometimes generalities, and often prejudices. Don’t hesitate to deviate from conventional wisdom to make your choice.

Which set of fins?

More than being the most common configuration, the thruster is the most versatile set-up, and the one that gives the most pivot and versatility. It's also a “predictable” set-up because it offers good control/balance, and a “manageable” speed without getting overwhelmed, which is perfect for all conditions.

We can then play with the type of fins to accentuate and improve certain behaviors. And to choose the fin best suited to your surfing, conditions and style, you need to understand how each of the following parameters, which make up the shape of each fin, will influence the board's behavior.

The rake

The rake refers to the back curvature of the fin. This is the distance between the end of the base and the end of the trailing edge of the fin (tip). The greater the rake, the closer the tip of the fin will be to the tail of your board. Ideal for experienced and powerful surfers to perform long turns, with maximum grip and drive. The drive corresponds to the ability to hold a trajectory while maintaining speed. A fin with a wide base will help maintain this speed, while a fin with a shorter base will offer less drive. Recommended for rather powerful waves. Conversely, the less rake there is (straighter fin), the greater the pivot. The pivot being the ability to make more or less tight turns. Ideal for tightening curves and turning short, therefore ideal for exploiting waves that lack power.

Imagine yourself at the helm of a catamaran with the rudders down, the boat will turn short and you will only need a little pressure to operate the rudders. But raise these rudders by applying a 45° angle to them, in this case it will be difficult to turn it short, and it will require a lot more power.

The base

The base is the lower part of the fin. The one that is in contact with the board. A long base will bring more control and ample curves. Ideal in powerful waves on which we will seek more hold, and more stability in curves and trajectories.A short base will provide more pivot and allow you to tighten your turns and free up the tail. We will choose this type of fins in slow waves because we will favor maneuverability over control. The longer the base, the more the fin will offer control and ample turns, the shorter the base, the more the fin will offer pivot, max speed and tight turns.

The depth

The depth is the height between the base and the tip of your fin. The deeper it is, the more stability and hold you will gain, especially in powerful waves. A short fin will have less friction with the water, which will bring you more speed. This low depth of your fin will free up the tail of your board all the more. This type of fin is recommended in light conditions.

The surface

Surface: A fin with a large surface will bring more control. This type of fin is recommended for beginners because it also provides more stability. A fin with little surface will provide more freedom under the back foot. The board will be more playful.

Distribution of the surface: In hollow / fast conditions, we will rather choose fins with a thin head with little surface at the head which will foil less and therefore less accentuate the curves. In conditions in which the movement will be slow, we will choose surface on the head to accentuate the maneuverability.

The flex

The flex of a fin determines its ability to deform and return to its original shape. A fin that has flex provides a smoother ride and will forgive mistakes. On the other hand, a fin with little flex, therefore more rigid, will bring more control, more reactivity and more power. Reserved for the most experienced surfers because these fins require the surfer to be very precise in his turns. The deeper and thinner a fin is in the head, the more flex you’ll have.

You can play with the shape and size of the fins, so you can stick as closely as possible to the surfing feel you're looking for. After the shape, the material of the fins is the most important point: fiber. Stiffness is the key to good fins. If you're upgrading your fins, you need to go up in stiffness.

Which shape to choose?

Lethal or Chemical?

These are two boards that complement each other perfectly. The Chemical is a high-performance shortboard for light to medium conditions. The Lethal shines in pushing conditions. We'll be tightening our turns a lot more on the Lethal and accelerating harder on the Chemical.

Lethal or Evolt?

The Evolt is closer to the Chemical: it's the competition version with even more forward projection. The Lethal keeps the advantage in slower conditions. The Evolt is perfect for a series of turns/maneuvers in sluggish waves.

To sum up:

  • the Evolt for reverses

  • the Lethal for turns

Lethal or Atomic?

What they have in common is a very similar playing field: pushing waves.

The Atomic has more character, with a tail that propels it +++ and drives it. This is the board for accelerating when you're already at Mach12. Ideal for nasty barrels and big carves in the face.

The Lethal's small tail area makes it a little more versatile and playful. You're both very free in hollow waves to squeeze turns, and even more at ease wedged at the bottom of long tubes that require you to manage trajectory and height in the face.

Comment bien coller vos pads ?
