Adjust the size or model to fine-tune pitch tail wingility, glide and responsiveness.

The recommended starting point is to match the front wing with its corresponding tail wing in the same size.

For example:

Veloce DW L front wing
Veloce DW L tail wing
0° angle

An L with an L.

This is the reference combination because the tail wing has been designed to balance the lift, speed range and pitching moment of the corresponding front wing. It provides a coherent level of pitch stability without unnecessarily restricting the foil.

From this balanced starting point, you can change the tail wing size to adjust the foil’s behaviour. Let’s see how 👇

Why use a smaller tail wing?

For example, you could use:

Veloce DW L front wing
Veloce DW M tail wing

The smaller M tail wing produces less force and therefore less stabilising moment. The foil becomes freer in pitch, accelerates more easily and may offer less drag and a more direct feeling.

However, this also reduces pitch stability. The foil becomes more sensitive to changes in speed and foot pressure. It can feel livelier and more radical, but part of that sensation comes from the foil being less stable.

This is especially important when riding with a wing, lowkite or kite. The rig creates an additional pitching moment because its force is transmitted through the rider far above the foil. A sufficiently effective tail wing helps balance this load and allows the rider to push harder while keeping the foil on the intended trajectory.

Without a wing or kite, such as in surf foil, downwind or pumping, it is often possible to use a smaller or less powerful tail wing because there is less external load to balance. An experienced rider may therefore prefer an M tail wing with an L front wing for more glide, acceleration and pitch freedom.

Why use a larger tail wing?

The opposite adjustment is also possible.

A larger tail wing provides more pitch support, a wider margin of control and a more predictable foil. This can be useful for learning, low-speed riding, pumping, strong rig loads or simply for riders who want to push hard without constantly correcting the pitch.

The important point is that reducing the tail wing mainly frees the pitch axis. It does not free the rail-to-rail behaviour to the same extent.

Roll freedom depends much more on the span and outline of the front wing. A compact front wing naturally rolls and carves more easily than a wide front wing. Fitting a smaller tail wing to a wide front wing can make the foil less stable in pitch without making it dramatically freer rail-to-rail.

Why mix different front wings and tail wings?

The front wing and tail wing do not have to come from the same family. Each component can be selected for the behaviour it brings to the complete foil.

This is why it can make sense to combine a Veloce DW tail wing with an Ypra Carve front wing.

An Ypra Carve front wing provides a compact, manoeuvrable platform with strong roll freedom and an easy rail-to-rail feel. A Veloce DW tail wing can be selected to add efficient pitch support and glide while preserving that manoeuvrability.

In this combination, the Carve front wing creates the turning character, while the Veloce DW tail wing controls the longitudinal balance. There is no need to create excessive pitch instability to make the foil turn because the Carve front wing already provides the required roll freedom.

When mixing families, the letter size should not be treated as an automatic match. The correct tail wing size depends on the front-wing size, rider weight, discipline, speed, rig load and desired level of pitch support.

The simple method

Start with the matching model and size: an L front wing with its L tail wing.

Choose a smaller tail wing if you want less drag and more pitch freedom, and have the skill to manage the reduced stability.

Choose a larger tail wing if you want more support, control and tolerance.

Mix front-wing and tail wing families when you want to combine their different qualities, such as the turning ability of an Ypra Carve front wing with the pitch control and glide of a Veloce DW tail wing.

Instability can feel radical. Stability allows you to ride radically.
