Making the most of this Race shape’s glide to surf a few little waves!

Surfing and Turning with a Race SUP

“While passing through Saint-Jean-de-Luz, I got to test my new GONG Flat Water 12'6 inflatable SUP in small, pretty soft waves and on calm water.

I know it's absolutely not made for surfing, but for now it’s my only inflatable SUP and I wanted to try anyway.

And well… It turned out to be pretty good. I already know how to surf on a regular SUP, but the difference here is the significant instability of this kind of shape. At first I felt like I was balancing on a floating log. Even just turning around is a whole thing.

But after a while you start to get the hang of it, and I managed to catch about ten small waves.”

Speed on the Take-Off!

“Obviously it paddles fast and catches waves easily, as long as you’re stable while paddling and the board stays relatively flat. I was afraid of constant nose-diving, but staying on soft waves, I didn’t really run into that issue. The nose sometimes acts like a submarine, but since it’s narrow it doesn’t pearl and it comes back up.

Once on the wave, it’s not really a problem to turn the board by stepping back and sending it diagonally. No issue either walking a bit forward to pick up speed again.

In short, I’ll definitely do it again. With a bit of practice, my paddling will probably get even more effective as I get more stable. And maybe I’ll even manage to do a quick pivot turn eventually.

Great board overall for cruising, the paddle stroke is super nice and the unstable side adds a bit of spice to the ride.” Daneel, on our GONG Galaxy group.
