While the Lethal and Lemon 2023 wing boards are now available in sinker format (35 and 45 liters), here is a return of a first wing foiling session on a comparable volume with the 39 liter Matata FSP Pro.

“I had a first wing foiling session this weekend with the Matata 4’5 surf foiling board! I wanted to test a sinker board for a long time. To experience how it feels… I had no previous waterstart experience in any sport. I have an intermediate level in wing foiling. Board volume 39L. My weight 87 kg.

Honestly I expected to struggle, but it went really well. I had a successful take-off on the 2nd attempt only and had no problem to get going after each fall! Well it’s a surf foiling board, so no V-strap at the front, so I was comfortable in goofy, but in a regular stance going upwind was quite tricky! But when 3/4 of the session is about surfing and only 1/4 about heading upwind, that’s fine! Conditions: around 25 knots with lulls at 20 and a few gusts at 30. Foil Fluid LH + Stab Fluid H38 (I voluntarily put the LH and not the MH to facilitate learning the Water Start) and wing 4m.

Advantages: the weight, nothing to do with a 95L wing board that I usually ride… Day and night!! The pumping is clearly more efficient, and the maneuvers in the surf downright more radical!! I had a blast for 1h30 in a small downwind swell. It was quite stunning! Disadvantages: At my level, you really need wind to take off, and sail well, as soon as the wind dropped slightly I absolutely couldn’t get the board out of the water. Stability at the beginning is difficult to find, and you still need a good balance. The other inconvenience of being overpowered means a larger sail in the surf… Conclusion: I will probably let myself be tempted by a Wing foiling board with a volume of 35/40L in addition to an everyday board in the 85L range for the conditions where I am sure to take off without struggling! I will stay on a 21 minimum width board I think for knee comfort, and when switching stance!”
