Volt Side Bites Fins Set - ST Box
Program
A versatile side bite designed to deliver the ideal balance of drive, maneuverability, and control in a 2+1 setup.
Overview
The Volt is the most balanced side bite in the range. It sits at the center of the pivot-to-drive spectrum, making it a highly versatile reference that adapts to a wide variety of boards, conditions, and surfing styles.
Its intermediate template maintains good pivot capability while preserving enough rake to generate drive and projection. The board remains smooth, stable, and easy to read, without feeling too locked in or too loose. This makes the Volt highly accessible for both progressing surfers and experienced riders.
Template
Balanced template. The rake is moderate, allowing a combination of pivot and projection. The board can turn easily while maintaining length in its trajectories.

Base
The base is intermediate, offering a good balance between drive and manoeuvrability. It generates speed without locking the board.

Depth

Surface area
The surface is evenly distributed. This creates a neutral and predictable behavior, ideal for versatile use.

Setup
The 2+1 setup combines a center fin with two side bites. This configuration blends the stability and line reading of a single fin with additional control and responsiveness provided by the side fins.
The feeling is balanced: the center fin guides the board through smooth, continuous lines, while the side bites increase grip and make it easier to engage in turns. Surfing remains fluid but gains precision and security in the rail engagement, especially as speed increases.
This is a versatile setup, ideal for preserving the flow and long lines of a single fin while benefiting from improved control in more technical or committed sections.

Buying guide
Who is it for?
The Volt is designed for surfers who want a simple, efficient and well-balanced setup. It suits everyone from beginners to advanced riders. It is ideal for those looking for a versatile and easy-to-use 2+1 configuration. It works in all conditions with no surprises. It helps you progress quickly and surf without overthinking. It is the all-round reference.
What is it for?
In a 2+1 setup, it perfectly complements a central fin by adding rail hold without altering the single fin glide. It allows more confident turns, stronger pressure in maneuvers, and a clean trajectory in varied conditions.
It works equally well on modern longboards, mid-lengths, and all-round boards. In small to medium waves, it offers an excellent balance between speed and control. In faster waves, it remains stable enough to maintain solid hold.
It delivers a balanced and intuitive behaviour that is easy to read and use. It is the ideal choice for a versatile 2+1 setup that does everything well.
What size?
In a 2+1 setup, the center fin and side bites work together. Their relative size directly determines the balance between glide, stability and manoeuvrability.
The center fin remains the dominant element of the setup: it defines the line, stability and overall behaviour of the board. The side bites complement this by adding grip when the board is on rail, allowing deeper engagement in turns.
The balance between these two elements is essential.
This guide focuses on two side bite sizes: 3.5” and 4”, the most common sizes covering all longboard and mid-length uses.
3.5” side bites remain discreet. They preserve a single-fin-like behaviour, with lots of glide, long lines and a very fluid board. In contrast, 4” side bites add more grip and responsiveness. The board becomes more dynamic, easier to turn and more modern in behaviour.
The fundamental rule remains simple:
The larger the side bites, the smaller the center fin should be.
And conversely, the smaller the side bites, the larger the center fin can be.
However, in practice there is an important limit: once the center fin exceeds 6.5”, only 3.5” side bites are recommended.
Why?
Because a large center fin already generates significant control and stability. Adding oversized side bites would unbalance the setup, making the board too stiff, less fluid and less enjoyable to surf.
Thus:
- a center fin of 7”, 7.5”, 8” works ideally with 3.5” side bites
- 4” side bites are reserved for smaller center fins, generally 6.5” or less, to add dynamism without excess.
When the center fin is large and side bites are small, the board behaves closer to a single fin: smooth glide, stable line and wider turns. This setup is ideal for semi-retro longboards, soft waves and noseriding.
Conversely, when the center fin is smaller and paired with 4” side bites, the board becomes more responsive. Rail-to-rail transitions are faster, turns are tighter and surfing feels more modern. This setup suits modern longboards, mid-lengths and faster waves.
Finally, note that total fin surface should increase as board size increases.
