The key question: which foil generates the most apparent wind?

Light wind definition: less than 10 knots in the gusts.

Quite often, it means 6 to 8 knots with a few weak, scattered gusts... Not enough to get on the water? Not fun? Quite the opposite, it’s magical: the silence, having the spot to yourself, the purity of flight, the feeling of gliding in incredibly calm conditions...

But 6 knots is half of 12 knots, which is a comfortable breeze for easy riding. So there’s no point pretending: gear up properly for the challenge!

Contrary to popular belief, the real challenge in light wind isn’t getting on foil: everything can take off. But there are two approaches:

• Take off easily.

• Accelerate once flying.

Which one works? Accelerating to generate your own wind!

In fact, it’s the only way to stop pumping and get through lulls without exhausting yourself with pumping that simply isn’t sustainable over time.

With a thick, easy front wing that takes off almost by itself, you save energy at the start. Fine. But then you hit a ceiling: you can’t accelerate. You reach the limit of the available wind: true wind + apparent wind = not enough = you have to pump through every lull or whenever you need to accelerate again. It’s exhausting and really not much fun.

At that point, the usual thought is: I need more power, so I need a bigger wing. And that’s where the vicious cycle begins, because a bigger wing is harder to handle and therefore harder to pump. 1 m² gives you 20% more power. But pumping 15% faster gives you 30% more power. The math is simple: increase your pumping cadence and stick with a wing around 5 m².

The key is therefore to accept a thinner foil that might require 2 or 3 extra pumps to take off, but will go almost 50% faster for the same amount of power in the wing. That’s how you get as close as possible to perpetual motion: the wing gets the foil flying, the foil generates wind, that wind powers the wing, the wing accelerates the foil, and so on...

In practical terms, a front wing like the Curve, for example, is very effective at taking off early thanks to its lift: 5 pumps and you’re flying. But for this specific program, it doesn’t offer enough glide to accelerate efficiently in light wind. Crossing a long windless patch then turns into a dock-start-style pumping workout, except you’ve got 15 kg of gear flying with you...

To really make the most of light wind, you therefore need front wings that can accelerate hard, maintain their speed and generate apparent wind. This apparent wind keeps powering the wing when the true wind drops and allows you to stay flying with minimal effort.
