There are no secrets when it comes to takeoff: you need speed to get your foil flying. The strongest riders can pump hard enough to lift off at very low speed, but it takes a serious amount of effort, and nobody wants to repeat that after every fall. There's a far more efficient solution: a board with a long, streamlined shape that glides effortlessly across the water with the slightest puff of wind.

The key features of an efficient light wind board
When it comes to early takeoff and comfort in light wind, there are a few key principles to keep in mind when choosing a wing foil board:

Choose a streamlined outline. The narrower your board is, with its volume distributed along its length, the more efficiently it will glide across the water. This is essential for quickly reaching takeoff speed with minimal effort.
The difference in glide between a Cruzader Point LW or HIPE Cruzader and a more compact-shaped board is truly remarkable. You no longer feel held back by the water. The board accelerates and moves forward with the slightest breeze.
If the reduced stability of these narrow boards while stationary concerns you, opt for a wider Cruzader Point XL, a Cruzader Diamond or even a Mint, which offers the best glide-to-comfort ratio in the range. In the inflatable lineup, the HIPE Diamond also delivers an excellent balance between glide and comfort. If you're just starting out, however, stability should remain the priority with more traditional shapes like the Zuma, or the HIPE Perf in the inflatable range.

Choose more volume. Sitting higher on the water gives you a clear advantage during takeoff. On a streamlined outline like the Cruzader's, the extra volume is barely noticeable once flying because it is perfectly distributed along the board. In the end, there's very little nose extending in front of you, so the riding sensation remains remarkably close to that of a conventional board. That's why many riders choose a Cruzader or HIPE Cruzader as their one-board quiver.

Look for a planing hull with minimal tail rocker. That's an easy choice in our Wing Foil range, where boards feature fast hulls with sharp tail rails that release cleanly from the water.
