DON'T MISS OUT: THIS SUMMER, I'M GETTING INTO WING FOILING!

At first glance, wing foiling may seem like a sport reserved for experienced riders. The reality, however, is quite different.

Boards flying above the water.
Impressive maneuvers.
Riders who seem to control the wind effortlessly.

From the beach, it's hard to imagine that everyone had to start somewhere.

Yet it has never been easier to learn.

The progress made in equipment over the last few years has completely transformed the learning process. Boards are remarkably stable, wings are more efficient, and foils have become far more intuitive and forgiving.

The result: today, thousands of riders discover the thrill of flight every year, sometimes without any previous board sports experience.

How do you get started?

Contrary to popular belief, learning wing foil doesn't require being an athlete or growing up by the ocean.

The most important ingredients are:

  • the right equipment;

  • easy conditions;

  • a willingness to learn.

Learning wing foil isn't more complicated than learning any other sport, provided you follow the proper progression. It's a bit like learning to ride on two wheels: it's simple on a scooter in an empty parking lot, but much more technical on a powerful motorcycle riding across a slippery surface.

Wing foiling is no different. If you start in unsuitable conditions, frustration can quickly take over. A paradox when you consider just how accessible and enjoyable this sport becomes with the right equipment and a calm body of water.

Just a few sessions are usually enough to learn the basics. After that, every session brings something new: longer flights, better control, and increased confidence.

Should you take lessons?

If possible, get guidance from an experienced and supportive friend, or start with at least one lesson from a qualified instructor.

Just a few hours are often enough to understand the fundamentals, avoid the most common mistakes, and save valuable time in your progression. An external perspective also helps correct bad habits before they become ingrained. Professional coaching is also a major asset for your safety on the water.

Of course, it is entirely possible to learn on your own. There are now countless resources available: video tutorials, technical guides, safety instructions, and feedback from other riders. Many wing foilers have learned this way.

Just keep in mind that learning independently often means making a few avoidable mistakes along the way: incorrect equipment setup, poor choice of conditions, or technical habits that need correcting later. Nothing insurmountable, but it can slow down progression and create unnecessary frustration.

If you choose this path, make use of the many How To guides available, especially on our platform. Also take the opportunity to talk with other riders at your local spot. They can often help you quickly identify a sticking point or a beginner mistake.

Every stage of progression is covered in our tutorials, including the key steps leading to your first flight, from launching to takeoff:

  1. Organizing your start

  2. Getting onto your board

  3. Getting onto your knees

  4. Taking hold of your wing

  5. Standing up on your board

  6. Initiating flight

  7. Stabilizing flight

Hundreds of beginners have followed the same path before you.

You don't need to rush.

You don't need to understand everything during your first session.

You simply need to get started.

How do you choose your wing foil equipment?

Equipment choice is probably the single biggest factor influencing progression.

  • A large board provides stability, whether in inflatable or hard board construction.

  • A suitable wing makes learning much easier.

  • A forgiving foil allows you to discover flight without fighting your equipment.

Today, GONG packs are designed specifically for this purpose: helping beginners experience their first successes as quickly as possible. Discover our complete packages and get fully equipped in just a few clicks.

What conditions are best for learning?

Choosing the right conditions is just as important as choosing the right equipment.

To learn in the best possible environment, look for:

  • flat water;

  • side-shore wind (blowing parallel to the beach, or even slightly toward shore so it naturally brings you back);

  • steady wind without large gusts or lulls;

  • wind strength suited to your wing's operating range.

In practice, 15 to 20 knots is often the ideal range for learning. Within this wind range, the water generally remains calm enough to make balance and movement easier, while still providing enough power for easy takeoffs.

It is also the ideal wind range for a 5 m² wing, which has become the most popular size among beginners. Its versatility allows riders to enjoy a wide variety of conditions without quickly feeling limited, while maintaining simple and comfortable handling.

These conditions allow you to focus on technique rather than fighting the elements. Flat water makes balancing easier, while side-shore wind provides maximum safety by naturally bringing you back toward the beach.

Conversely, choppy water and highly inconsistent conditions make learning significantly more difficult. What seems hard in those conditions often becomes surprisingly easy when the wind is clean and the water is flat.

For your first sessions, prioritize ease and simplicity. It's the best way to build success quickly, gain confidence, and discover the unique sensation of flight.

Absolutely avoid offshore winds when learning, as they can carry you dangerously away from shore.

When is the best time to learn?

Right now.

Because wing foiling has never been more accessible.

Because the equipment has never been better.

And because few sensations compare to that first flight above the water.

This summer, give it a try.

The next rider taking off for the very first time could very well be you.
