Understand the Mob :
A compact Board, stable with incredible speed.
The Tail is one of the keys : big enough to instigate a quick boost forward with pressure from behind.
The 2018 Pro version is almost identical in the Outline but offers a different flow. The volume has been concentrated at the center of the Board. The nose a bit thinner, and the tail far more racy.
The Outline still gives the same sick speed as the 2017 MOB. But the re-mastered finesse in the tail gives far more control and precision in the 2018 Pro model.

What's the reason for making 2018 shapes 1-2cm wider than 2017?

Hello,

because most of the guys are using these boards in shoulder high waves or less. Wider means more maneuverable and more stable.

Thanks,

Merci.

Hello,
even if my special edition mob isn't a real 2018 (but a special version 80 lt of the "old" 2017), someone could be interested to know how the board performs (I see on shop another one mob 7.2 x 80).
Of course the board is for light (or semi light)weight supper. Until 75 kg is ok with a good skill. My weight is 70 kg without wetsuit, and I think it is really stable for a 80 lt board, more than fatal 6.10 x 80 (and also fatal is real stable). For sure is stable as a board with 10/15 lt of volume, also in choppy conditions... The "secret" is to take some centimeters of nose out of water, but this rule is good for all shapes.
I think that this type of shape (tomo with some differences) is perfect for volume reduction. Extra thin rails give a perfect surf feeling, but the bigger wet area gives the same power in turns. Is compared with a "normal" 7.2 x 95 the difference is impressive.
As I expected, the board has an early and easy take off and a good paddling speed, the larger nose and parallel rails give the speed right to catch the waves.
I tested the boards in different types of waves, windy, glassy, micro, mini, medium and also over 2mt and the board is simply perfect in all conditions. In micro, of coure, hasn't the same power of a ONE, but only because I know this specialized shapes I can say this; for all "normal" supper than unknows the amazing performances of a one, the MOB (and also this MOB) will shine also in micro. The program of a MOB is absolutely total. Also 2 mt of good waves are surfable.. this shape could be the "only one board" for a lot of surfers.
Extra nice turns, bottom at full speed, good vertical attitude, great and full power relaunch after top turn, really live under feet, always great drive and perfect pivot. The low radius turns isn't a problem and also the larger bottom at full speed in bigger waves. Large tail and extra thin rails work perfectly together: large tail gives power and accelleration in mushy and thinner rails have a special grip on wave face and allow tight turns with low foot pressure (even the rail is so large). The ride is really natural; supper haven't to controll the feet pressure and haven't to think to put more pressure front or rear, the board seems work in automatic (I think because the board wants the same pressure on both feet). In any case the accelleration is automatic. To go behind the line up and the white foams isn't a problem, good noce rocker and low front volume allow good performance also to reach the line up.
Almost no row (with righ shortsup tech; another universe if compared to different shapes).
Even if I say a wrong thing, for me this mob is a mix of performances between a one and a fatal (fatal bigger than the right volume for weight of surfer)... One will works better in mini, fatal in well shaped waves, but this mob works really well in all MED conditions.
Really, I can't find a problem in this shape. It is a perfect board for light weight supper or good skill surfer until 75 kg.

Another good shape by Patrice and, as usual, I'm very happy to have this extraordinary board in my quiver.

PS: the Chinese finish is really perfect, the weight full (pad and fins ) is 6.4 kg. I tested some fins, and seems perfect fcs reactor M front and a couple of 10 cm rear rear..

Interesting...
Since the Curve SP was announced, I have been toying with what would be my next "challenging" board. I was tempted by the Curve SP, but I am so hooked on the Fatal/Mob/One diamond nose, that I cannot see myself buying a board with a pointed nose again. Plus I do not feel I am young enough to benefit from an ultra-narrow board: a 28" wide board has already more rail-to-rail nimbless than I can actually totally exploit.

I have been toying for years with the idea of combining a Mob nose with a Curve rear, my personal Chimera. The Fatal 2017 was very close to this ideal, so it satisfied me. But for some specific hollow waves in Les Landes it still sometimes have more power in the tail that I can handle.

So, since this week, I was considering just making my "SP" board by just undersizing a Fatal/Mob/One, for exploring hollow powerful small/medium waves. I was considering a Fatal 7'1" 95l for my 95/100kg, but the Mob 95l is also tempting: it will be stabler than the Fatal, and has even more rocker! But I am a bit wary of the wide tail requiring more footwork in hollow waves than a 95l Fatal

So, Filippo, do you think reducing the volume of the Mob alleviate a lot the need to move the rear foot in hollow waves, or the wide tail feeling is still there?

It isn't easy to reply because the weight difference is the key of answear.
For me, and for my weight, fatal 95 (I have also fatal 95 2017) it is big in big and good waves, but, for you (it is only a my idea) could be better than mob in hollow waves.
Tail of my mob doesn't give the feel of a normal large tail (as old fatal, or one o faking), but the foot, in any case, must be at the end of the board. Fatal instead has a double rear foot position. Wingers are the line of difference betwenn cool and powerfull turns and aggressive turns and iper fast rail to rail.
I haven't doubt: in hollow waves better fatal than mob. Mob surfs all, but is an estraordinary "all round" board more focused on mushy. Fatal is a real wide range board more focused on good (even if surfs also mushy).
I know, perhaps my description isn't perfect to do the right choose, but both boards are so universal that we have to find our preferences and feelings more than to find the "best" between mob and fatal.
I can only say that I want to sell my fatal 95... not because I don't love it, but in my quiver, after mob 80, is the less used board.

Thanks Filippo, that's what I suspected.
Yes, I think I will also resell my big Fatal (120 for me), as it doubles with my Curve 7'11" in my quiver now.
