Need little more noseriding help!

Message par Erik » jeu. sept. 03, 2015 8:13 pm

Hi, Bear, et al:

Could you look at the video below and give me your thoughts and advice? First of all, I think I just look terrible on the wave. No style or class, which I think are fundamental and necessary to walking and noseriding well. I mean, even when I'm just standing there, it feels and looks awkward.

btw / I have a slight brain disconnect between telling my feet and legs what to do and them actually doing it. a medical thing that i am trying to deal with as best i can.

it does look to me like maybe my feet are both pointed toward the rail, where maybe my right foot should be pointed more toward 11pm or 12noon on a clock.

i also think my steps aren't getting me close enough to the nose for my front foot to get five over. maybe i am mis-timing them?

Anyway, here it is: https://youtu.be/Wxt97ukgq64

And once again thanks for any suggestions you might have.

Not bad, actually.

I think what you should work on is the placement on the wave: be a bit more in the curl, not too far away on the shoulder, and thus on a more powerful part of the wave you could be a bit higher on the wave for more lift of the nose.

On the smoothness, I think the best advice is to crosstep on land as much as possible, when walking in the house for instance...

Bear & Coolas:

Oh, man, I can't thank you two enough. Such great stuff!

I can now see that my board is not back far enough in the white water. More stalling needed. And if I choose a better, more parallel line, per Bear #1, that should keep me from gaining speed, too. Yes?

Am doing a good bit of dry land practice. I'm going to keep it up and start to work on loading the inside rail more as I walk.

I know I've been having a problem keeping my line high. I often find myself at the bottom of the wave as in Bear #4. Will engaging the inside rail and keeping it engaged allow me to remain higher? I must work on that.

As you can see in the #1 - #4 sequence, I am dropping lower the entire time. Just to be clear: the counteract this, i need to have more weight on the inside rail, right?

Can't wait until we get waves again. Sadly, nothing is due for at least a week. Dry-land walking, here I come!

Yes,
You must think of the nose as wing that penetrates the wave face by the inside rail, just like you would play as a child with your hand out of the window of the car, rather than a sled that is laid flat on the wave surface and "floats" there. The rear foot is close to the rail and drives the board by its rail into the wave

Hello,

yes, you are 100% right. You need to walk a little more closer to the inside rail. Maybe just 2/5cm.
The key is to keep it is your mind before and during the walking. Maybe the first wave will not be the right one but the second one will be better.

You are very very very close to make it perfect. The distance between what you do and a perfect noseride is the timing and the line.

An easy training is:
- walk to the nose
- and try to go out of the wave without leaving the nose.
You will have to put a lot of pressure on the inside rail. So you will have to locate your back foot at the right place for it.
It is a great exercise because it is the opposite mistake of the one you do actually.
A perfect noseride is between what you do and this.

The interesting thing about noseride is what makes it good or wrong is just a very little sum of things. When you match them together, you have it for the rest of your life.

Enjoy,

Excellent instruction!
I don't think you should use the paddle as much as you do. That way you paddle, you speed away from the curling foamy wave. The board should glide by itself. Trust it!
Of course it helps by having an IT10' or similar 50/50 Classic noserider but I think your board can do it.

Hello,

Magnus is 100% right.

You use the paddle because the line is not the correct one.

This video shows very well in slow motion the key points: driving with the rear foot on the rail, and positioning high on the wave face

i think ya'll are right about over use of the paddle. for one thing, i always feel like i'm about to stall out of the wave, so i'm paddling to keep myself in it. but, if i was positioned more back toward the curl, i bet i'd feel more locked in to the forward movement of the wave.

so many variables, so many nuances, so many ways to do it wrong, so few to do it right. one of these days i'll get everything lined up just so.

thanks again for your help, one and all. i know what to do, it's just a matter of doing it. i guess it shouldn't be that difficult but it sure feels that way most of the time.

onward!
