Looking for small board for small waves.
Looking for small board for small waves.
Hi.
I am looking for a board for small waves, between 0.5 and 1m. I am looking for a table to be able to progress in the maneuvers in the wave.
This will be my second table; I currently have an 8'9 Gong Karmen in which I feel very comfortable. But I look for a faster board in small waves. These are the waves that I have 80-90% of the days. I'm looking for a table that feels leaner in these waves.
Actually I am undecided between Mob 7'6, 7'11 or Fatal 7'7.
I am 48 years old, I weigh 80 kg and I measure 171cm.
I go to sup at least 3 days a week in sessions from 1'5 to 2h.
I think that with the 120l of 7'11 I would be safe but maybe it is better to risk a little with the 7'6 ... Or I will be a little crazy.
I don't know how Fatal would result in these circumstances.

Re: Looking for small board for small waves.
Mob or Fatal would be the best choices for small waves.
The Mob for slower waves (period 10s or less), the Fatal for faster waves (period 8s or more).
With 3 sessions per week, you will have no problem progressing, but since you do not have a previous surf experience before SUPing, I would recommend you get down only to 120 liters first. You should be able to get a 105 liters board one day, but I think it is too big a difference from your current board.
So Mob 7'11" or Fatal 7'7". But I guess the Mob will be more adapted to the majority of sessions where you live, from what I can read (never surfed there, alas).
However, if you keep the Karmen (or another bigger board), the Mob 7'6" may be doable, as you get out often. But since reducing a lot the volume is useful mainly for powerful waves, I do not think it is worth it. I like to have extra volume in my boards for slow mushy waves.

Thank you for your advice.
I think I will go for the most conservative option and will gradually lower the volume.

Take the 7'11 Mob, to be on the safe side. It is a really nice board with the feeling of a small skateboard!

Re: Looking for small board for small waves.
Hi.
Again here to comment on my choice and my impressions.
At first I bought a 7'6 board similar to the MOB, but from another brand, because she had more liters (115 liters specifically) and I wanted a really small board.
It was great to contrast the difference between Gong and another brand of similar price but with a much more rudimentary shape. However, I was surprised that it was not difficult for me to get used to the volume decrease and in the first session I could already surf. Throughout the following sessions I was noticing that it would be no problem to go to the 105l of the MOB 7'6 Pro and I bought it as soon as I sold the other one.
When I tried the Mob 7'6 Pro. The first time in the water, the feeling was WOW !!!! This is easier to balance, it is easy to paddle, it is easy to catch the wave, it is fast and it is GREAT BOARD!!!.
I am super happy with this board. It is a great board to continue progressing and learn maneuvers in less powerful waves like the ones we have in Huelva.
Before the arrival of the Covid I was able to surf for 5-6 sessions of small waves and you feel a board that enters the wave with total ease and that feels very noble and agile all the time.
Now I'm just waiting, like everyone else, to be able to go surfing again and say goodbye to this nightmare.
Thanks for your comments and thanks to Gong for the MOB.

Re: Looking for small board for small waves.
Thanks for your report!
It is always interesting to get this kind of feedback.
Yes, most of us on this forum were hooked to the Gong brand by the high quality of their shapes. Their rocker is quite magical...
