Re: Sessions Sweden 2013-2014

We are getting closer and closer to the perfect boards for our waves. The 2014 Soul and the Freak are just perfect for 65-75 kg surfers and the soft waves. Maybe even heavier surfers?

The best session so far with this amasing Soul board. 0,5-1,5 peeling soft waves and only around 12 knots of wind.
The glide is surprising me every wave. The trick is to position the feet on the right spot, depending on the board and the wave interaction. I managed logo rides with both feet in the front Gong logo for a long time. Time after time.

And the board keeps going despite reforming waves. Our waves are often flattening after a while and then rises again. Other board are hard to get through the flatter parts but the Soul gets through and accelerates again for another noseriders further in.

I switched to the Freak 2014 after a while and the that is a compleat other world. Grippy edges, faster speed and acceleration and really easy to redirect in cut backs even in smaller waves. Must be ridden differently than the Soul which edges are not grippy at all in the same way. The Soul also turns well but in a different way and needs a different body technique. The take off is very different, with the Freak speeding away from the wave but the Soul just glides. Two different species! Both very good boards.
Thanks Patrice!

We are expecting wind and waves tomorrow again. Ahh!

Ahhhhh summertime!!
There is usually not much wind most summers but this week was a nice exception 4 days of waves in a row. Unfortunately the rain was pouring down and the camera is not waterproof . Thus no proof from the best session 2014 at home. Last week we had peeling 1-2,5m waves and rides up to 300m. With 100m nose rides, logo or more with both feet!!!

But some pictures from tonights sunset bonus session in surprisingly nice and punchy 1m+ waves, with some usual wind chop, and a great shore break wave to practice some longboarding skills on the Soul, of course . The speed is critical to get to the nose, still learning every wave. It is soo much fun, even in crappy 0,5m waves like yesterday. Today was a blast, I got like 25 waves in a hour!

The Soul is on top!

By the way, I think my next complimentary board to the Soul will be a Zero or a XTR Freak.

10pm!

Hoping for the infamous midsummer gale to arrive thursday, just in time for the midsummer party in Sweden. The best gift for surfers up north, we usually get at least one windy day. And since it is so light in our summer we can surf from 3am to 10pm!! 8) 8)
Just about 3 weeks until France now

Sherpa 12'6 BR summer session

Message par MagW » sam. juin 28, 2014 2:18 pm

No words are needed to explain the evening session we had this week. We went out at 8pm and returned 9.30 pm.
Racing with sailing yachts and enjoying the warm sun.
The Sherpa BRs are just perfect for a combined work out and sea pic nic!! Next time we will bring some food on board.

Walking to the beach in shorts is a good start, at least where we live!

Back from France and the waves we love. We had waves every day, often with very little wind. Even weak completely offshore winds some sessions!

Picked up two new toys, the 9' Zero and a Final 7'6. Wow on both boards performance! The third session on the Final below. Beachbreak 1 m Gironde.

No wind at home means Sherpa 12'6 BR sessions. The BR is worth every penny!

Aboard the new Zero 9' !!
Very stable, quite fast, easy to lean from side to side in turn, good grip in turns and finally very easy to nose ride. What more can I ask fore? The top turns are slower than on a shortsup but I can improve my technique quite a bit on the top.
For sure I can ride smaller board like the Miracle in France but for waves in Sweden I believe this is a better choice for most days. The glide is better between sections and it is more forgiving. In 2015 I will perhaps go smaller or get a 8' - ish longboard. Or the XTR Freak...

Pictures are from France. Windy yes, but hey this is what I am used to. No other SUPs in the water, and almost no surfers either. 8)

You may want to try the AS. It has tons of glide on the flats, and is very stable with its wide tail. Plus you will discover a new kind of board...

There was another Gongista on an 8' AS when I was on my Freak. Looked like fun. However, my 63 kg and some choppy waves is not the best combo, I think. Maybe a more narrow Simmons shape would be fun? Patrice can make his 61st proto, just for me!? :D

Long distance on the Sherpa BR this morning was awesome!
No wind, no waves, 24 degrees and a bag packed with coffee and sandwiches. The goal of today was a couple of small islands outside the coast. I have been looking at them for a while but the wind can be quite a struggle. But today was perfect! Paddling straight out to sea for 1 h and then time for the morning coffee.

Autumn rain has arrived...with some wind and waves thank you!
I haven't updated this thread with any sessions lately. Our 12'6 BRs have been used frequently in between windy days and since the wind have been absent this means quite often.

Walking distance, I love it!

A neighbor got their first Gong sups this summer and they have been using them twice a day at least!! They got a Sherpa 10'6 and a NFA10. Recommended!
The Sherpa 10'6 is a perfect allround beginner friendly sup if you are not to heavy. And everybody who tries the Sherpa just loves it. Not too big and not too small to carry and handle. Good stability and good speed. The perfect training tool. The BR 12'6 is bigger both in the car, on land and in the water compared to the 10'6.
The NFA 10 is very stable, no wind drift compared to the Sherpa 10 and perfect to ride your first waves. The Gong word is spreading, more neighbors will join next summer! :D

The lack of waves made the decision easy, we have to go to France again! So in September we drove 1900km one way in one one day and night and then jumped aboard our SUPs and surfed the lovely waves of Gironde. The bus was packed with 7'-9' surfboards and a Zero 9', a Cloud 8'6 and a Final 7'6 XTR. During our stay we surfed 2-3 times every day on everything from ankle high clean waves to hurricane swell double overhead closeouts. And perfect Hawaiian climate - perfect conditions for a good vacation!

Here are some pictures to start with. More to come. Ahh!

Time for some waves from Sweden!
But we have had 12 days of constant windy conditions in the end of August - September when I surfed the Soul, the Zero and even the Final a session or two when the wind was human.

The Zero has really proven to be my gale force windy weapon. Stable in chop, easy take off even in steep sections, good glide to pass flat sections, simple nose rides and nice rail to rail turnability for hard full carves!! In really windy I ride it with quad fins to make it easier going out and for taking off straight without catching the edge. The turns are sharper in thruster mode but that is not first priority for me in strong winds. We have had a few amazing sessions where we rode waves 3-400 meters. Takeoff on steep 3m faces, a couple of high speed turns, a nose ride, paddling a stroke waiting for the wave to reform and steepening to 1,5m for some sharp turns again and the wonder final with 50m+ peeling 1m beach break with real world nose ride possibility!!! And then back out, a 10 min hard paddle (mostly on the knees because of the wind). The best wave suping so far for us, in windy conditions. The only problem is that we need 30+kts wind to make it happen.

Micke on a Cloud and Oliver for the quick first time test in the waves on a NFA10'. It was big out there he said afterwards!
I went out with a Zero later on but no more pictures was taken from this August session, unfortunately. The pictures does not show how good it was, just some wave size estimate. It got bigger and bigger during the session. 8) And the wave faces got cleaner and cleaner. :D But the guys did not get any waves while I was behind the camera...
The closest we get to the Gironde waves up here!
