The storm named Egon passed by this weekend, and with it came huge waves and lots of wind.

We surfed a beach that is somewhat sheltered and the wind was even off shore. But gusts of anywhere between 20 and 45 kts blew across the bay. Windsurfers were on 3,5 sails and I was on the SUP!
Industrial surfing at its best!
Image

The water is not green. . .
Image

More brownish. . but the waves are nice and even glassy on the inside
Image

Beautiful January storm, without any snow in it!!
Image

Peeling waves!

Been surfing the longboards Soul, Zero and the Freak XTR. Similar characters but also each of them with their individual twist! I like it!

Thx!
We have no choice. If you want to surf here, you will learn. There is no easy way
The good thing is that we enjoy all conditions when we travel. And it is usually so easy! Everything is less choppy and less windy AND warmer!! :)

New boards have arrived!
The NFA8' xtr is an amazing board, a compact mini longboard. So beautiful and light :D

Kai Sallas 6"5 and 4" thrusters. Rowing effect with these fins is nothing to worry about.
Tha stability is very good for my weight, but of course this is the widest board I have (76cm).
Take off is soo easy, needs almost no speed to catch the wave. And since the nose and rocker is quite considerable, and the board is short, the nose does also manage some steepness in the wave. It does not dive as a 9'+ longboard with less rocker.
Acceleration is good and the grip on a steep wave is fine.
The glide is very good, lika a NFA9 or more. For my weight anyway, 64kg.
The curves are very nice, even with this slightly bigger fin setup. Very grippy! Turning radius is short when I use some force, side to side changes are really quick.
Tried some cross steps and one foot around the logo. It works alright but you have to keep control of the situation and step back quickly , when needed. It is not slow moving and stable like a 9-10' longboard, so everything is more sensitive and faster.
First test completed and I think this board will suit many surfers out there!

And the waves have been the best in a long time. Despite snow and hail storms thundering in over the coast and the temperature being 1 C  , Normally it is ice in January but this year is exceptionally warm, thank you.
The wind was side to side off both yesterday and today and the waves were peeling, just peeling.

No pictures of surfing these days. Blue skye and snow clouds at the same time!

Wow, I just love the NFA8'! :)
The board seems to be quite perfect for our normal conditions, 1-2 m quite slow waves and some chop and wind. Conditions like above in the picture.

The board has a very good grip going sideways along the wave. Takeoff is so easy.
But what I like the most at this time is the turning sensation!!! Very snappy turns even with the 6"5 Kai Sallas and 4" thrusters. I realize that I have just scratched the surface of this boards potential. 5th session today.

I was ridning the classic Soul 9'6 yesterday. That is another story, but such a nice session. Everything is more relaxed and slow, especially the turning technique is very different from the XTR 8'. But with the addition of possible looong nose rides. Just another way of surfing!! Ahhh!

The classic nose riders have come to use many sessions in Sweden. When the waves are small and have little speed these boards are perfect. I have been trying both the Soul and the NeverStick during the same session and there re similarities but also big differences between them. I have been thinking about getting an IT 10' also but cancelled an order in Feb. I will wait to see what l'Ours has up his sleeve for 2016!! :?:

The NS has amazing glide and it is so easy to ride the nose. And it actually turns very nice, but you have to use some force and pivotal technique. I am surprised how well the NS turns.
The Soul likes bigger and faster waves better but can also be used in 20-30cm waves. I have no pictures from the water from the sessions unfortunately.

Love or hate the design of this board!?

Spring is late and summer is in the far distance. Water temperature is still only 10 degrees, manageable in a 4/3 suit but not less. Hood and gloves too.

But hey! The winds in May have been for surfing and not sunbathing, the best May for ages. We got a late board delivery from Gong with Cloud 8'6 & 8'1 and we have tried both in windy and choppy conditions. Just what tehy are shaped for! 8)

Both the 8'6 and the 8'1 is good allround board for the slow surf we have in Scandinavia. The volume is there but not too much, the rails are thin and the nose cuts the waves perfectly.

The NFA8' is so compact and nice to carve!

Re: Sweden/ Sessions

Ahhh, what a month of waves and wind. very unusual to have these conditions in May and June. Winter waves.

Two great sessions aboard the XTRs Cloud 8’6, Cloud 8’1, NFA8’, Final 7’6 and Freak 9’2. These boards are just so good, all in different ways.

Surfer: experienced 63kg, cold water and slow windy waves. Often 25-35kts wind

The Clouds are perfect in choppy waters and slow waves. Very stable, easy to paddle and with quick acceleration. Yesterday we got 3m and steep takeoffs with 25-35kts onshore winds. The nose handles the chop well, both paddling out and surfing back. It does not dive in the steep faces either. Compared to the Final 7’6x74-105 lit the Clouds are easier to get going but for sure does not turn like the Final. The Final is faster from rail to rail and has a higher top speed to I believe. But this does not matter in our waves. The Cloud 7’8 would be closer in comparison but might be to small for my waves. The Final is not the perfect shape, for us up here anyway. But i will keep it for traveling to France etc. The 8’1 is a very good compromise for my waves, more safety margin than the Final. The tail is powerful and you can get good speed out of the turn with good technique, and it keeps planing easily.
Image
Cloud 8'6

The NFA8 is very similar to the Clouds. But the nose gets a bit stuck in windy conditions, the Cloud cuts through better. I like the turn better on the NFA than the Cloud, even with Sallas 6’5 center fin. Very stable with good power, you can really lean heave and push into the turn. But I have surfed the NFA 8 much more than the 8’1 so it might be different when I get to know the Cloud character better. The NFA is for sure much easier to stand still, but there is a little bit to much volume for my weight in rough seas and sharp turns. But a very radical semi short board indeed. And you can get a Hang5 with some practice, just don't put to much force on the fromt foot.
Image
NFA8

The Freak 9’2 is the board I love the most! But I very seldom get the conditions it deserves and for which it is made. The bigger the better, the cleaner the better. It can handle chop for someone who is 75-80kg, but with my 63kg it is like standing on a wooden log on top of the water. I fall of a lot!!! And we only get big waves with big winds, yes you get the picture. But yihaaa!, the surfing feeling on this board is truly amazing. It can take steep takeoffs, it can take steep curves, it goes with instinct from rail to rail, sharp turns and bigger turns, the noses are the easiest on any SUPboard I have tried. It does not slow down stepping forward, just don't run fast forward. A truly sensational experience! 15 liters less and maybe +1-2cm and it would handle my strong winds much better. However I think this board will be For sale / Vendue this summer. I want to keep it but my garage and my bus is full of boards…the big days are to few.

The quest for the ultimate water experience goes on!!

The Cloud line is a must in the Swedish quiver!
Here are a couple of pictures from a new spot we tried with the Cloud 8'6. Slow waves and outgoing current makes it trickier than it looks like. But the Cloud makes it so easy. Stefan is doing the best of the conditions. :)

11 degrees in the water and air, brrrr.

It's been a while since I updated this post. Although 2015 was the best surfing year for decades, the camera has not been doing much work... Lots of rainy days too, which is bad for the cameras. I was surfing more than 100 days in Sweden last year!

Many more Swedes than ever are hitting the waters around Sweden on surfboards, even though the waves can be both challenging and crappy. Those who have the most fun are mostly riding longboards and SUPs, you can really benefit from the slow waves we usually have... Sure, we can ride the shorebirds to, but since the wind is ever present it is very, very tricky to catch the waves you want. The Clouds are perfect and the new 2016 longboard lineup will get us happy!

We have also been doing trips to both France, Portugal and California during this year and have had soooooo many amazing sessions on surfboards and SUP boards. So the total sum of surfing sessions for me is almost limitless 2015, the best year ever for me. Unbeatable!?! We will se... 8) 2016 has started nicely. Only 2 weeks with ice in the water. We have been surfing 15 times so far 2016 in Sweden. No wind for 1 week but in one week the wind and waves are back again.

Here are some pictures to start with.
