Help, big guy, Pie / Matata?

Message par Zepelin » mer. oct. 07, 2020 12:15 pm

Hi *,

Sorry for writing in English but at least my wife is french :)
I'm a big guy, 95kg, 1.84. Kiting for 10y, foiling on Gong.
I gave away my TT a long time ago and I'm only foiling/surfing with the kite.
Skill level: Intermediate-Advanced

Spot: mushy, side/on-shore waves most of the times. ~1m top. Sometimes a good stom with a 3-4m.
Wind: 15-23kn
Kite: BRM Cloud (sorry, I'll upgrade soon :) )

I had many surfboards with my last one being North Pro 6'2 (18.5" x 27L) and I spent almost 90% of my sessions trying to go upwind efficiently. Of course when the wind is blowing a steady 20kn its easy, but most of times I felt that for my weight I'm struggling. Plus, the kite isn't very upwind oriented.

I'm going to place an order, the only question is Pie or Matata? the larger sizes of course.
I enjoy the waves but I'm no Ben Wilson and simply looking for something that will reward my time in the water.

I would love any feedback and advice, thank you so much.
Cheers

First: how can a french girl go with an english guy ? for the food ?
(joking of course)

Your question is picky, these boards have similar program.
Matata is really efficient in onshore conditions and swall waves, and will perform in freeride sessions.
Pie is more interesting for the turns feeling and should perform in onshore conditions too ( I have not tested it, maybe one day).
Choice should be a nightmare.

I had a similar problem: broke my Catch kite and now beginning foiling.
So I made a bet: try to progress in foil for "day to day" conditions, take a more radical board for good conditions (Fatal kite) and ride strapless more often. My purpose is also to my save my knees before having real problems.

:):):) I'm a terrible cook

Thanks for the comment. Initialy I went for the Matata, but then I started thinking about its ability to carve turns, I don't want only upwind ability, I've got the foil for that, but I do want something to get me back to the waves quickly.

How much does 3L in volume make? thats the difference between my old board and the Pie, 27-->30
If its that significant I would go with the Pie, if not I would lean towards the Matata with 35L.

for me, I will chose the Pie 5'6 for the turns, if you like wave riding, with the matata the turns are different, harder with the big one
I doesn't like big tail for waves, that's my opinion

Et il pourra de toutes façons utiliser Google Translate ou DeepL qui marchent désormais pas trop mal.

n'hésitez pas à écrire en français

Feel free to write in French.

I think I'm going to buy the PIE 5.6, but I would love to hear more.
The shape looks great, the only concern is the upwind ability for a heavy guy with a 10m kite.

Thanks again
