SUP Technos

All GONG experience on SUP boards

We currently offer two technologies for our rigid SUP boards, FSP 2X and FSP Pro. The advantage of these two technologies is to offer a hull in full PVC sandwich. This extremely rigid, hydrophobic and solid shell surrounds the entire surface of the board.

SUP FSP 2X Technology

  • 3D shape on modeling software.
  • Preshape by numerical control for total reliability.
  • Shape control by traditional templates, finishing off the last mm 100% by hand.
  • 100 % epoxy resin and EPS foam blank: solid and lightweight.
  • Deck, hull, and rails in vacuumed PVC sandwich: incomparable solidity and incredible dynamism.
  • Deck: full PVC/fiberglass sandwich composed of a high-density PVC foam core and 2 layers of 4oz fiberglass and 1 layer of 6oz biaxial fiberglass, fiberglass reinforcements on the sensitive areas.
  • Hull: full PVC/fiberglass sandwich composed of a high-density PVC foam core and 2 layers of 4oz fiberglass and 1 layer of 6oz biaxial fiberglass, fiberglass reinforcements on the sensitive areas.
  • Rails: the PVC sandwich structure completely covers the rails: increased structural strength, very good impact resistance (paddle hits).
  • Integrated carrying handle in the top PVC Sandwich : limits settling, avoids breakage in the surrounding area.
  • Resin tinted hot coat : nobility of the process, weight saving and solidity of the finish.
  • Hand-made matt “custom finish” for weight saving and a better glide.

The FSP 2X technology is easily repairable as new in the event of dings or accidents. The PVC foam of the sandwich is waterproof and prevents water from entering on everyday impacts. EPS foam blank does not deteriorate because it is really protected from water. And repairs have a much larger support to lean on and blend seamlessly with the surrounding material.

These boards are equipped with our innovative and high-end technology called FSP 2X for the best weight / strength / performance compromise on the market. It’s quite simply the ultimate in custom vacuum fiberglass techno, as standard.

The shape is cut with a numerical control (CNC) from a high-end and lightweight EPS foam blank.

We glue in vacuum on the entire board, at a pressure of several tons, a fiberglass and high density PVC foam (called Airex) which forms a hydrophobic shell of 3mm that’s super strong and rigid.

Then we apply a biaxial fiberglass which completely covers the sandwich of the board. This super strong mesh acts as a protective grid with its large strands of fiber. It boosts performance by taking over the flex tensions and reinforcing the board for increased durability. This biaxial layer is covered by a classic fiberglass for a nice finish.

These outer layers are also placed in vacuum. This modern process densifies the composite and leaves it only the exact dose of useful resin. The rest is absorbed by a blotting cloth to make your board as light as possible.

Then come the finishing coats with a first hot coat in epoxy resin, super resistant to impact. Then a polyester hot coat which will equalize the micro variations of the surface (less than a millimeter).

And finally the decoration which is as light as possible, therefore with transparency effects which reveal the construction for the greatest pleasure of the eyes. We don’t like painting because it puts on a lot of weight and it’s fragile. We prefer noble materials directly accessible under your eyes and sublimated by some stylish decorative elements.

Our technology is truly the pinnacle of board building. Durable, efficient, repairable, the brands capable of offering a total PVC sandwich in large series in SUP can be counted on the fingers of one hand and GONG is the leading one!

We were the first to mass-produce SUP boards in the world in 2006. This unique experience makes GONG the experts in the design and manufacture of the sport.

EPS foam blank does not deteriorate because it is really protected from water. And repairs have a much larger support to lean on and blend seamlessly with the surrounding material.

These boards are equipped with our innovative and high-end technology called FSP Pro. This full-carbon full sandwich PVC offers the best dynamism while preserving strength, at an incredible weight. It’s quite simply the ultimate in vacuum technology for customs, used as standard on our production models.

We then apply a carbon fiber layer which completely covers the sandwich of the board. This high end layer gives this shape amazing responsiveness. The covering with two of these layers on the rails reinforce this part of the shape and gives a lot of extra rigidity to the board.

These outer layers are also placed in vacuum. This modern process densifies the composite and leaves it only the exact dose of useful resin. The rest is absorbed by a blotting cloth to make your board as light as possible.

Inflatable Couine Marie technology

Couine Marie boards have a double thermo welded layer on the deck, hull and rails. It makes them even more rigid while still being very light.

The dropstitch used inside Couine Marie board is a Woven Dropstitch : it is the best assembly technique of the inflatable world, for best in class performance, rigidity and lightness.

Technology Couine Marie

  • Woven Dropstitch Double Layer Welded technology, the best compromise between weight/stiffness/strength. Combining our historical Double Layer Welded technology with the new Woven Dropstitch, this technology is by far the most reliable, lightest and stiffest.
  • Weight savings of around 20% compared to the classic Double Layer (no glue between the 2 welded PVC layers).
  • Rigidity gain of 30% compared to standard technology.
  • Strength gain: twice as thick as standard technology.
  • Double layer of PVC on the rails.
  • Triple layer central stringer on deck and hull for maximum rigidity and reduced vibration.
  • Premium Woven Dropstitch: the slightest irregularity is refused and the batch is resold to low cost factories.
  • High density Dropstitch Woven: with more threads per square meter than a basic Woven, it resists much higher pressures, lasts much longer, and does not present a risk of explosion.
  • Working pressure: 15 PSI. Our Stand Up Paddle Boards are perfectly rigid at 15 PSI. There is no need to overinflate them, but you can mount them at 20 PSI without any problem.
  • Two-year Warranty on all our Inflatable Boards.
  • We keep in stock all the elements that make up your Board because we are manufacturers. So, you can easily repair them and make them last for more than ten years. It’s as simple as repairing a bicycle wheel.

With its top of the range inflatable technology in Doubled Layered Welded Woven Dropstitch, this GONG board is beautiful, light, very rigid and really solid.

The Couine Marie are the best, yet still accessible with our direct sales distribution that does not add margins.

What is Woven Dropstitch?

To understand Dropstitch, it is two skins that are connected by threads every x millimeters. These skins are made of waterproof PVC and the threads are ultra-resistant. All these threads are vertical and of the same length. They allow the two skins to be parallel under tension. When we create this mesh of threads, we are going to make “knots” on the surface a bit like canvas. Then we drown these surfaces in PVC to form the waterproof skins.

We then describe the particularities of the Woven under two axes:

1/ Vertical

The Dropstitch threads are no longer aligned vertically but crossed at different angles, thus forming oblique struts that are cleverly distributed to balance each other. This concept gives much more rigidity to the whole.

2/ Horizontal

The flat braiding of the Dropstitch (the knots) becomes a very compact mesh which brings a great rigidity to the Board. In Woven Dropstitch the fibers are spread out instead of being in cylinders. This mesh is tighter and more homogeneous. It consumes less PVC in the interstices, like combed fibers which consume less resin in the Carbon.

The density of the mesh naturally increases rigidity and requires a thinner PVC backing than conventional Dropstitch (1.9mm vs. 2.5mm for equivalent rigidity).

This optimized weave therefore allows the material to be considerably lighter, without altering its qualities.

Always Double Layer please!!

Attention, our techno remains a Double Layer thermo-welded with all its advantages of rigidity and strength.

What we call the Woven Dropstitch is the heart of the Inflatable Board, which makes the inner dynamics of the Board. But on the outside, nothing is better than a Double Welded Layer to protect your Board from aggressions.

For your information, the Woven can be offered in single or double layer. It’s obviously cheaper in single layer 😉 Inform yourself and ask questions…

The Double Layer Woven is the high-end version of the Inflatable Boards.

Which Boards are made of Woven?

The Woven Dropstitch is the techno for all our Couine Marie SUP, but also in the HIPE.

The 3″ thick Boards like the Couine Marie Surfboards and the smaller HIPE, remain in classic Dropstitch since the Woven is not produced in 3″ to date.

Our inflatable boards with COUINE MARIE technology

First inflatable technology

The First range is our budget friendly range of inflatable boards, but do not be fooled by the name, the only cheap thing about them is their price. The construction truly is amazing at this price point, miles ahead of what you could find at your local supermarket.

First boards are perfect do discover the SUP and for recreational use but they can do much more thanks to their refined and well performing shapes. The Couine Marie range will be ideal to those who want to go further in their practice of SUP, or just want the best the industry has to offer.

The technology and materials used when manufacturing both First and Couine Marie boards are different, but the materials used on First boards are still very high quality.

First boards are assembled with one layer on the deck and hull, and two layers on the rails which offers excellent rigidity.

Built in the best factory in the world, the First is a magnificent board at a never seen price. Forget the low cost and low quality boards coming out of low-end factories, the First simply is a high end board with less accessories and a simple but styling visual to keep the price affordable.

Its technology uses thick PVC, which can handle every possible family use without bending. It is a very rigid board that performs really well.

GONG is a renowned and serious brand, who took Stand Up Paddle at its birth and brought it to the level of respectability and performance that is now associated with the sport . Proud of this, we would never consider building a low end board similar to those sold in supermarkets.
