Description

The Droïd is the ultimate Wing for freestyle.

Freestyle is becoming a heavy trend in Wing. The absence of a mast foot allows a number of tricks absolutely crazy! We wanted a Wing specialized in tricks. The specifications are simple:
maximum compactness, acceleration, lightness, extreme handling, power ON/OFF.

The Droïd becomes the first-generation of Wing 100% dedicated to Freestyle. It is so compact that you can see the water between the Board and the tips 😉 You can easily imagine how much it turns in all directions with such a small wingspan.

In the waves, it switches to neutral as soon as you sheet it. But it develops formidable power at the takeoff. This compactness is a real concentration of vitamins that many will appreciate.
With its two small windows ideally placed, you attack tricks with confidence. The windows are not useful in navigation because you look ahead, not downwind. But taking a look without having to wind up your Wing before the tricks is a plus to attack hard.

In hand the Droid looks tiny, a real toy. We have a mix of nervousness and maneuverability never seen before. The high range is a bit more physical because it has power, but nothing prevents you from getting into the harness or downsizing. The goal in Freestyle is to have the smallest possible Wing to search and destroy in all directions, not to go to the extreme in size.

You want to lay down the nastiest moves? The Droïd is the only Wing for which this is the 100% the job.

 

Shape:

The tips are at 90°. So, they’re further away from the water. It’s a Wing that’s easy to pump and harder to get caught up in the water, which maximizes your success in tricks, even when you’re in contact with water.

The architecture of the Droïd is compacted to reduce the wingspan. In particular, the negative of the curve of the trailing edge has been reduced to maximize the surface area on a given span.

Its hollow is moderate. With the Droïd we aim at Vmax and thus a certain finesse! But its hyper nervous architecture makes it take off in three dry pumping strokes. The Wing Droïd offers a huge high range but all in lightness.

Seen from the front, the Wing Droïd has less V than its sisters. It develops more traction. The de-segmentation of the leading edge in its central portion is a key to this shape. The hollow faces a long seamless section on the leading edge that makes the Droïd hyper rigid. Characteristics doubled by our double layer reinforcement in this section!

 

Equipments:

  • The Droïd has only four handles: it’s a considerable weight gain! Ideally placed, you will always be at ease to pilot your Wing. And they are rigid enough to offer a good grip but soft enough not to damage your Board, break, or ruin your hands.
  • Four fiberglass micro-battens to stabilize the trailing edge when you shock hard. It’s super light and strong.
  • The window greatly reduces the risk of collision. Around the edges, you’ll often be too busy to look through, but when attacking a leeward maneuver, the window saves you from having to slow down by lifting the Wing, or head down. A quick glance and you can attack full bore without risk of collision. Our window PVC is super strong, and their surface is reduced to save weight.
  • In the series of little tricks that change everything: the double valve. The big fast inflation/deflation valve on the leading edge is doubled on the slat for immediate deflation and storage. Still a one-pump system, it inflates through the leading edge in a matter of seconds. Then open the two large valves to deflate everything instantly.

Buying guide

For whom?

Whatever your level, the Droid is accessible. It allows the most technical maneuvers but it is not technical.

For what?

It’s the first 100% Freestyle wing in the world: what more can I say!

You like to lay down tricks, boost airs incessantly, and have a tiny wing in your hands: go for a Droïd!

And if you just want a very compact wing, it’s perfect.

What size?

  • The 3m² is dedicated to strong wind (35 knots), and/or ideal for land (skateboarding).
  • The 4m² is top from 20 to 35 knots. Ultra maneuverable, a must.
  • The 5m² is great from 15nds to 25nds. It’s the key size that is used all the time.
  • The 6m² is great from 15nds to 25nds. This is the key size for strong people.
  • The 7m² is great from 10kt to 18kt. The power background is delectable in the light.

Don’t overestimate the power of the Wing. The ambient blah blah consists in making you believe that you will have fun with a 4m² in 12nds, even 8nds… It is really just BS that aims to make you crack on a cheaper wing and make you believe that this sport is magic.

The reality is that an 85kg wing needs 20 knots in 5m² to fly at the beginning. After about 15 sessions, it will fly at 15 knots in 5m². And if it is sporty it will pump hard and take off at 12 knots in 5m² to go from soft to 8 knots. All this can be learned and requires water time.

Best Quiver choices?

The Wing Droïd works with everything but especially with a compact and light Board. Obviously, it will be more in tune with a Foil dedicated to performance, in 85cm for example.

You will be able (will have to) add to this combo a SUP for windless days, and surely a Board dedicated to surfing. But if you go to the wing, you may already have these toys in the garage 😉

Which Leash?

Take a 5′ to 6′ Wing Leash in light wind and a 10′ Leash in strong wind. Preferably a model dedicated to the Wing and of telephone type. A short leash allows you to resume the Wing quickly.

A long leash protects the Wing from the foil falling into the canvas by letting it go further.

Check its condition before each session and change it every year. This is your lifejacket.

Don’t let your wing flap in the wind at the end of the Leash, it is not unbreakable! Also in waves, do not hold your wing by the Leash, it will explode or you will hurt yourself.

Harness or Harness free?

Riding without a harness is sexy because it makes you feel free and it’s stlyin’. You can move in all directions, it’s really nice.

On the other hand, it is necessary to use less canvas to avoid having your arms extended. This means having to pump often to take off.

All our wings 2021 have harness line attachments. So, you have the choice.

So, if on the other hand you like to ride with more canvas, the use of a harness is almost mandatory if you don’t want to do sessions bridled at one o’clock. In this case, the installation of harness lines is super simple, (see our tutorials on the forum). We advise you to use a harness that is as stiff and as soft as possible, with a windsurfing type hook.

Tips of 24 to 28cm of distance between the batten and the V-shaped hollow will be perfect. Use a small diameter rope and a thin sheath because the ends of the rope are heavy and rigid, and therefore dangerous for turns and other tricks.

So, it’s up to you to see if sensation and aesthetics prevail over performance. But it is a safe bet that soon all riders will have harnesses because the evolution will go towards more powerful wings and more performance.

Wishbone or Handles?

We have tried everything, in every conceivable combination. The Wish is great but is not at all suitable for a beginner public who needs a light wing.

With a Wish, he’ll hit the Board and damage it, as well as hit themselves in the shoulders for nothing. And it’s as hard to transport as it is to install.

In 2021, we reduced the number of handles to a minimum and saved almost a kilogram per Wing.

The choice is therefore four ideally placed handles :

  • One for handling and surfing on the leading edge.
  • One front hand grip on the batten.
  • A space to put a piece of harness between the front and rear handles.
  • A low power rear handle and tricks on the center strut.
  • A full power rear handle on the center strut.

Full Window or Canopy?

wings without windows are cheaper, lighter and easier to store.

wings with windows are safer, stiffer and more responsive.

For committed jibes, a wing with a window is a must because safety comes before the few grams you could gain. It is not used to admire the landscape: it is used to see a silhouette to abort a dangerous curve that would cause a collision.

With Battens or without?

In the light wind, light wings are more pleasant. Then it is without slats that you can use your Wing Pulse 2021. But as soon as it goes up or you speed, the Pulse’s integral battens are a real plus. Two in one 😉

Dry your wing ?

Unless you end your session with a long ride in the sun and land on a pontoon, it’s rather rare to get out of the water with a completely dry wing. 😉 Note that there is no need to dry your wing if it is to be used regularly in salt water, as the salt protects the materials from mold.

If, however, for transport or storage reasons you want to dry them, you must absolutely avoid hanging the deflated wing by the handle on the leading edge. It’s however very practical but it is the best way to obtain a hernia on the central strut at the junction with the leading edge following the collapse of the bladder inside. The bladders are movable in the strut and the leading edge. So if you hang it up deflated to dry, the bladder can slip, or even crumple, in the strut sleeve.

So ideally, you dry your inflated wing in the shade, and at worst flat or at least with just the inflated central strut.

Availability:

The dates of availability of all our products are written on each product page, in the size and colour of the product concerned.

These dates are valid at the moment you consult the site and/or place an order. It is possible that this product may be ordered a few seconds after your consultation. It then becomes unavailable. If you have placed an order, this change does not concern you: the product you order is still available on the date indicated at the time of your order.

We sell several thousand products per week. The stocks are therefore very evolutionary. But our management always shows you the real availability live.

Pre-order:

Some articles are proposed in pre-order during their routing to our premises. You can buy this article which will arrive at our place in a few weeks. This method avoids the fair to grab upon receipt of the lot and the disappointed ones who would not order within the hour.

Upon receipt, we will ship it to you as a regular order.

The times indicated on the pre-orders are 95% reliable. First of all, because we only pre-sell finished products that are arriving to us after Customs, and therefore shipped right after. And also, because we add decent margins with concern to the dates announced by the shipping companies or railways.

However, a Worker Strike, a breakdown, an overbooking, can unfortunately happen. In the case of a delay, you will be notified by email (check your spam). It is generally less than a week and totally independent of our good will.

As soon as we receive the container in La Baule, we ship your order within three working days. Then the carrier takes over: delivery time and tracking numbers are under their responsibility.

It is possible that the date displayed on the online for the pre-order of the item you have ordered and paid for may change for two reasons:

  1. All quantities of the batch are sold (most common reason). In this case, orders placed for the first container will be delivered as scheduled.
  2. The container is late and we have to shift the date by a few days. (Strikes, breakdowns, overbooking, can unfortunately happen). You will be notified by email.

We never change the delivery dates of a container without notifying customers.

 

Delays:

The dates that we announce are shipping deadlines, which GONG has in stock and available here physically.

We usually give a shipping time within 3 days, but in most cases, we ship within 24/48 hours. Normally morning orders leave in the afternoon for example.

Then the transport service takes over. The variables are then important between the customer being delivered to France (very fast) or Bulgaria (a good week) or to a forwarding agent or to Asia or the USA… You understand that each location has its own type of delay.

We work with serious and well-known carriers. They do their utmost to make you happy even if a snafu can happen. In any case, we are there to make things easier and to arrange our customers.

 

Shipping Fees: 

Contrary to others, we do not hide shipping costs in the price of our products. At GONG everyone knows exactly what he pays. The transport is charged at its strictest value, and the person who comes to pick up his products does not pay hidden transport fees.

    Conditions : 7-15 nœuds sur un plan d’eau complètement plat.

    À terre : Dès que vous la gonflez, vous pouvez voir à quel point elle est compacte. Elle a moins de V que les autres ailes de la gamme et la position des poignées est vraiment intuitive et facile.

    Sur l’eau, c’est une aile qui vous donne une puissance rapide, une accélération et une maniabilité étonnante. Elle possède une envergure très réduite qui est parfaite pour les figures de Freestyle, du carving 360 aux Flakas ou aux Air jibes.

    Super légère dans les mains, lors du pumping et surtout en sortie de tricks aériens, vous pouvez faire une transition très rapide sans vous soucier des tips qui touchent l’eau.

    En résumé, la DROÏD sera mon aile de prédilection pour les journées de Freestyle, les eaux plates ou les petits tremplins pour se lancer dans les airs. Les petits gabarits vont adorer cette aile car elle a la plus courte envergure de toute la gamme.


    Conditions: 7-15 Knots on completely flat water.

    On Land: As soon as you pump it up you can see how compact it is. Less V shape than the other Wings of the range, really intuitive and easy handle positions.

    On the water: A wing that gives you quick power, acceleration and amazing maneuverability. Really tight wingspan that is perfect on the Freestyle tricks, starting from carving 360 to Flakas or air jibes.

    Super light in the hands, when pumping and specially when coming out of air moves you can transition really quick without worrying about the tips to touch the water.

    To sum up, the DROÏD will be my Wing of choice for the Freestyle days, flat water or small kickers to launch into the air. Small riders will love this wing as it has the smallest wingspan in the range.

    J’ai peu de sessions avec la Droid 7m pour l’instant donc ce sont surtout mes premières impressions plus qu’autre chose.

    C’est une belle amélioration par rapport à ma Pulse 7 2020. Elle garde beaucoup de traction. Au pumping j’ai beaucoup moins besoin de faire attention à ne pas toucher l’eau. Elle garde naturellement l’angle que je lui ai donné, elle n’a pas cette tendance à se redresser de mon ancienne Pulse.

    Une fois le vol acquis, c’est sympa de ne pas avoir besoin de penser aux pointes de la wing. On peut bien doser la puissance qu’elle délivre et elle suit très naturellement dans les transitions. Je n’irais pas jusqu’à dire qu’elle se fait oublier (ça reste 7m) mais je n’ai pas besoin de penser à son placement comme avec la Pulse 7 2020. Elle est toujours là où j’ai envie qu’elle soit et elle raccroche mieux le vent après le passage à zéro d’un jibe. Avec la Pulse j’avais pris l’habitude de la tirer en arrière puis en avant pendant le jibe pour la garder en vol dans le tout petit vent. Je n’en ai pas ressenti ce besoin hier.

    Pour l’instant ma chouchoute reste la Neutra 5 mais comment est-ce qu’une 7 pourrait lutter contre une 5 😉


    I have few sessions with the Droid 7m so far so these are mostly my first impressions more than anything else.

    It’s a nice improvement over my 2020 Pulse 7. It keeps a lot of traction, when pumping I have a lot less need to be careful not to touch the water. It naturally keeps the angle I give it. It doesn’t have that tendency to straighten up that my old Pulse had.

    Once the flight is acquired, it’s nice not to have to think about the tips of the wing. We can precisely use the power it delivers and it flies very naturally in the transitions. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that it gets totally forgotten (it’s still 7m) but I don’t need to think about its placement like I did with the Pulse 7 2020. It’s always where I want it to be and it recovers the wind better after a jibe. With the Pulse I had gotten into the habit of pulling it backwards and then forward during the jibe to keep it flying in very light winds. I didn’t feel that need yesterday.

    For now my favorite wing remains the Neutra 5 but how could a 7 win a fight against a 5 😉

    flew the 7m droid today and all I can say is amazing! wing tips never came close to touching the water(my mast is only 80cm) and gusts hit 25kts the droid handled it no problem. Light, fast, very responsive….great wing im glad I bought the 4m droid too 🙂

Generalities about the Wing:

The Wing is a machine with an inflatable structure directly in the rider’s hands. Handgrips are used to control its flight and the power delivered.

The Wing’s number one advantage is the absence of a mast rig. This allows you to switch from a horizontal windsurf-type traction to a vertical kite-type traction. The best of both worlds can be combined in total freedom.

Much less complicated than a kite and much lighter than a windsurfing sail, the Wing lightens you to the zenith and accelerates in front of you.

The Wing combines the advantages and moves of these two sports, and it gives even more with all the possibilities linked to neutrality in surfing, and the rotations under the Wing and other offsets… the potential of moves is endless.

Ideal when combined with a Foil, it is much more reassuring than a kite and much more manoeuvrable than a windsurf sail.

The Wing is by far the simplest support to learn how to Foil, far ahead of all other sports. A great way to learn to Foil afterwards in other sports.

 

It is the perfect machine:

  • Compact, it fits in a car and is easy to fly.
  • Lightweight, you can ride your Quiver without having a hard time.
  • You can go in the water anywhere, except in the shorebreak.
  • Very little sensitive to the quality of the wind. If it falls we return quietly.
  • A potential in surfing and tricks almost infinite without a mast rig.
  • High performance for a minimum of constraints.
  • The attraction of novelty, it’s good to change sometimes.
  • No major danger.
  • Smile, smile and smile.

 

With its glide, you don’t have to overcast to have fun. In gusts of wind, its structure naturally absorbs excess power. The pros will be able to put on a harness to size up and boost performance. But amateurs will also find real relief in the harness. Contrary to popular belief, it’s the Wing that carries your arms, not the other way around. But after two hours without a harness, you have to admit that fatigue is there. Everyone is free to hold on with bare hands or to relieve themselves.

Ideal with a Foil, it requires more air than a kite which will always have the advantage of pulling a lot from 4/5 knots. The Wing will require between 10 and 15 knots to express itself on a Foil and will remain super easy even in 35 knots, even 50 knots, where the kite often rhymes with big risks.

 

It is great with a pure Wing Board, but also with multiple supports such as :

  • SUPfoil
  • Surfoil
  • Stand Up Paddle “SUP” (rigid or inflatable)
  • Skate
  • Rollerblade
  • Mountain board
  • Anything that slides on snow
  • Etc.

The advantages of the Wing are clearly identified: simplicity, compactness and lightness provide unequalled freedom of movement and ease of use. The Wing is ready to fly in 1min chrono: no line to unroll, just two flexible slats to insert in their sheath, a few strokes and off you go.

The technology used to make the Wings is very similar to that of our kitesurfing wings, but much stronger. Multiple reinforcements are present on the stress zones according to the different uses.

The shape of the Wing is “self-stabilizing”. Don’t imagine orienting it by the force of your wrists like on a boom: it doesn’t work like that. You put your back hand down: the Wing will lay flat above your head. You put it up and the Wing goes vertical. Easy! This is called umbrella or screen piloting. It is often said that the beginnings of the Wing are more like pole dancing than windsurfing. Indeed, you almost have to have the back hand vertically under the front hand when you are not flying, to keep the Wing as an umbrella. This way you keep it away from the water, and you use its traction with the same angle as a kite to lighten up. So, think pole dance ;-))))))

Know everything about the Wings Droid

Warning:

You must read the detailed user manual completely before using your Wing for the first time.

Be sure to have a full understanding of it. Wings can be dangerous depending on their size and the strength of the wind. You have to check the wind range of your wing so that it corresponds with conditions and your actual skill level.

For the first few sessions, never use your new Wing in its high wind range. Use your Wing in a secure environment. Take the necessary time to learn how to handle the equipment under optimum safety conditions. Never underestimate the traction power of your Wing. Even a beginner’s Wing can develop a pulling force of several hundred kilos depending on its size and the strength of the wind. Do not overestimate your abilities. Misuse can cause serious injury or death to the practitioner or others. Do not use your Wing at sea in offshore winds. Use your Wing equipped with a leash. Be careful to avoid any collision. Be extremely careful if you sail with your Wing and a board equipped with a foil.
