FORUM : FOIL MAST SIZE TO WING !!!

“Hello,

I open this topic because it is crucial for your progress.

We see that people adopt the reflex from Kitefoil : a short mast is easier.
While for the Wing it is wrong.

The main reasons that make a long Mast delicate in Kitefoiling is the very strong lateral pull downwards and instability due to the fact that your Kite is held by long lines.
In Wing, you have the Wing directly in the hands, and the leeward pull is limited to this. So the worries you dread in Kitefoil are minimal in Wing.
One could also say that in Wing your supports on the Foil are more vertical and less in opposition than when Kiting.

On the other hand, the Wing needs margins and only a big Mast can offer you that.

For example, in the chop the slightest touchdown is synonymous with ejection for non-experts. A large Mast will keep you away from the water.
Another example, to boost when you lose power, you will be happy to have a long Mast to put your Foil down softly until the next burst.

In maneuvers, a long Mast can increase the difficulty by the leverage it generates, but it will be offset by the margin of error it will give you before touching the water.

The only negative point of a large Mast is the launch. It’s really painful to have water up to your neck to get on your Board. But no more than in Kite or Windsurf …

For me a beginner must start in 65cm Mast on flat water. Then as soon as they’re flying they must pass in 80 or ideally 90. And the experts must be on a 100cm.

Thanks.”
