CHOOSE YOUR MAST

Aside from launching and your very first flights where a short 65cm mast can help, you will have everything to gain with a long mast. The additional length will offer more headroom and therefore more ease and ultimately more performance. This is the reason why all of our complete foil packs for wing foiling consist of masts of at least 85cm. If you want to compose your foil set out of a complete pack or complete a pack with an extra mast, here are some tips on choosing the right mast.

Unlike kite foiling, there is little opposition of force with a wing because it pulls less. So we put only a moderate angle on the mast. As a result, mastering a large mast when wing foiling is not a problem.

And since the boards used are much bigger than with a kite, the inertia is greater. So your foil feels less crazy. Everything is calmer. So don’t be afraid of a long mast.

The size

In choppy water, in transitions, in sloppy conditions, a large mast will be ten times more pleasant. Go for a mast of about 85cm, whether it is aluminum or carbon. This is the key size. Shorter is a hassle.

Of course in freeride and in race, the must is the 100cm carbon Monoblock. Absolutely magical. But the Alu 95cm is great too.

  • For beginners: Alu 65cm at the beginning then a length of about 85cm.
  • For the experienced: Alu 85cm (or 90cm in freeride), Monoblock carbon 85cm in freestyle and waves, and 100cm in race, as soon as possible.
  • For the Pros: 85cm carbon monoblock for freestyle and surfing; and 100cm to fly in race.

The techno

Regarding the choice of techno, carbon enjoys a huge advantage in dynamism. Under stress, it will return to its original shape twice as fast as aluminum. The sensations are at their best and the steering is precise and light at the same time. On the other hand, the carbon techno is more expensive than the aluminium technology which is quick and easy to produce. There is therefore a significant difference in price. Aluminum is therefore the best choice for a beginner who is less impacted by the limits in dynamism and therefore in performance of an aluminum mast.

Also note that unlike carbon foils, aluminum foils are subject to galvanic corrosion which requires proper maintenance. In addition, the multiple parts necessarily generate more play than a Monoblock carbon mast. Finally, for those who have a long walk from the parking lot to the beach, the featherweight of carbon is appreciable 😉
